Mercer tops Ohio farm income list (01/12/08)

Mercer County was ranked No. 1 for the second year in a row with the highest farm income in Ohio.

Mercer County was top-ranked in farm income in 2005 and 2006, according to information released from the Ohio Farm Income Report.

Commodities include income from production of corn, poultry, wheat, milk, soybean, oats and hay, other crops, hogs and cattle.

Leaders of Tomorrow

EMBARQ and The Commercial Review have joined together for the third year to recognize area high school students for their leadership.

"Indiana Leaders of Tomorrow" honors youth in grades 9 through 12 for their leadership through community volunteerism, academic success and extracurricular activities.

Those students nominated in the area will be featured in a special section of The Commercial Review. Eleven finalists and the schools they attend will be chosen from around the state to receive a $500 cash award.

One winner will be chosen to receive a $2,500 cash award and $2,500 will go the student's school.

Nominations forms are available at www.leadersot.com or at The Commercial Review, 309 W. Main St., Portland.

Whetstone hired

Bryant resident Jeff Whetstone was recently hired as controller at CrossRoads Financial Federal Credit Union, Portland.

A Bryant High School and Indiana Business College graduate, he has previous worked at Peoples Bank, First National Bank and most recently at First Merchants Corporation of Muncie.

Physician certified

A local physician has received his recertification through the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. J. Frank Vormohr was recertified after he completed 300 hours of continuing medical education. To earn the recertification, he also had to possess a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine and successfully complete a one-day written exam.

Building permits

The construction of a garage in rural Portland tops the list of building permits for December. Stephen D. McBride of Mac's Lawn Shop, 3096 East 500 North, Portland, was granted a permit to construct a $35,000 garage.

Other permits were granted to Steve Shawver, 6549 East 300 North, Portland, pole barn, $24,000; Eric Siegrist, 9491 West Division Road, compost building, $5,000; Portland Forge, 250 E. Lafayette St., Portland, receiving building, $4,200; and Diana L. Smith, 721 E. Arch St., Portland, residential addition, $22,000.

Dwayne M. Muhlenkamp, 1268 West 800 South, Portland, was granted a variance.

Two intent to build swine confined feeding operations were also filed in December.

Thomas M. Homan, East Division Road between county roads 200 and 300 East, plans to construct two buildings, while Jim, Rick and Brad Dues (JRB Dues and Sons) plans to build one building on county road 400 South between Boundary Pike and county road 300 East.

Software available

Decatur-based BrugalBrothers Software has announced that it will be donating $20,000 worth of its new e-mail security products to tax exempt or not-for-profit agencies in Adams, Allen, Jay and Wells counties.

The software, SpamaGator 3000 Email Security Appliance is a self-contained software that runs with the popular VMware Player or server.

It is designed to eliminate spam and protect users from e-mail based viruses and infected attachments.

The e-mail is distributed as a download from www.frugalbrothers.com. Use of the software is on a first come, first served basis, according to company officials.

Organizations wishing to use this software must submit a copy of its 510 C form and contact (260) 724-2748.

Featured speaker

The American Society for Quality Section 904 of East Central Indiana will feature a speaker on Wednesday in Muncie.

Mike Oxley, quality control manager for BorgWarner of Muncie will speak to the group at 6 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade, 4949 West Hessler Road, Muncie.

The public is invited. Those who attend this event must pay for their meal upon arriving.
