Mescher leads runner-up Patriots

Jay County roundup

DECATUR - Adam Mescher's impressive front nine led the Jay County High School boys golf team to a second-place finish Saturday.

Mescher played the front nine at 2-over-par at the Bellmont Invitational to lead the Patriots to a 386, 11 strokes better than at the Yorktown Invitational a week earlier. The host Braves won the tournament at Cross Creek Golf Club with a 330, and South Adams was third in the six-team field at 411.

Mescher recorded six of his seven pars and his only birdie on the front nine, putting his best stretch together on the third through sixth holes. The team's lone senior posted a par on No. 3 and then birdied the 338-yard, par-4 fourth. He added birdies on the fifth and sixth holes to play the stretch at 1-under.

He also had pars on No. 1, 8, 9 and 14 on the way to an 85.

Drew Houck had five pars in his round - three on the front nine and two on the back. He came up with his lone birdie on the 478-yard, par-5 18th hole to shoot 90.

Evan Ryder posted a 103 in his first varsity competition of the season, and Austin Mann added a 108. Mitchel Rigby shot 113.
