Metcalf powers Patriot wrestlers

WINCHESTER — The Patriots more than responded to Winchester’s opening run.
Jay County High School’s wrestling team swept the final 12 matches Thursday, winning 10 of them by pin, on the way to dominating the Golden Falcons 66-9.
Zach Metcalf had the quickest pin of the evening for the Patriots, who improved to 12-2, as he finished off Lazarus Smiley in 48 seconds in the 160-pound match. JCHS finished the match with consecutive pins from Hunter Gillette (182), Kyle Garringer (195), Nick Spahr (220), Eric Hemmelgarn (285), Alex Abbott (106) and Robert Cooper (113).
Also adding pins were Dustin Tighe (132), Austin Bentz (138) and Jesse Finnerty (145) while Nick Leonhard (152) and Eric Beougher (170) each won by decision.
Angel Rascon (120) turned in the only contested victory for Winchester with a 9-6 decision over Conner Ray.

Swimmers top Norwell
OSSIAN — Jay County swept the host Norwell Knights, winning the boys and girls competitions by scores of 112-67 and 103-82 respectively.
Senior Alex Sutton powered the boys, leading a one-two JCHS finish in front of Caleb Hummel in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 2.16 seconds. He was also first in the 500 freestyle in 5:42.07.
James Keen added victories in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke for the Patriots (2-2).
Other wins came from Josh Lykins in the 100 butterfly, Wiley Young in the 100 freestyle and Tayler Garringer in diving.
Mary Hudson turned in a pair of wins for the Jay County girls (6-1), who bounced back from their one-point loss Tuesday to Oak Hill. She was first in both the 200 freestyle in 2:18.73 and the 500 freestyle in 6:10.11.
Caitlin Mark, a sophomore, earned wins in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle, and Eme Miller was first in the 100 butterfly.

Freshman boys win
The JCHS freshman boys basketball team built a first-quarter lead Thursday on the way to a 35-23 victory over the visiting Winchester Golden Falcons.
Jalen Ryder scored 11 points to lead the Patriots, who were up 12-3 after the opening period. Nate Brackman added nine points.

EJ girls beat Bluffton
East Jay Middle School’s eighth grade girls basketball team used a balanced scoring effort in a 29-7 victory Thursday over the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
Lyla Muhlenkamp, Emily Williams, Sydney Robbins and Gabby Hart all shared the Chiefs’ team-high of four points. Abby Wendel chipped in three points.[[In-content Ad]]
