Amy Meyer didn’t let anyone else decide whether she would get to play another game. She took matters into her own hands.
The South Adams graduate drained five 3-pointers to lead her 17th-ranked University of St. Francis women’s basketball team to an 85-67 victory over No. 15 Hastings College in the first round of the NAIA Division II tournament Wednesday. It was the eighth consecutive first-round win for USF.
Meyer scored 19 points as she also hit all four of her free-throw attempts. She also had two rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block in the victory.
However, St. Francis dropped out of the tournament Friday with a 96-67 loss to top-ranked Cedarville (33-1). Meyer had 13 points, five rebounds and two assists in the loss, which marked the final game of the senior’s career.
The first-round win gave the Cougars 17 all-time wins in the NAIA tournament, which ties Shawnee State (Ohio) for the most in tournament history. They are also tied with Shawnee State for the most tournament appearances with 11.
Tyler Niekamp
A graduate of Fort Recovery will participate in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional men’s basketball tournament beginning today.
Tyler Niekamp and the host Findlay Oilers are the top seed in the tournament. They play eighth-seeded Quincy tonight at 6 p.m.
Niekamp also grabbed one rebound as Findlay won the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title. He grabbed his board in a 76-57 semifinal win over Michigan Tech, and also played in the 87-64 championship victory over Wayne State.
Caleb Bye
The Jay County graduate helped the Ball State men’s swim team to a third-place finish at the Mid-American Conference championships last weekend.
Bye took fifth in the 3-meter diving event, scoring 445.57 points. The Cardinals scored 571 points, finishing behind Eastern Michigan (1,008) and Miami (768).
Mitch Waters
The Jay County graduate saw his first action for the Manchester College baseball team as it opened the season with a 4-3 win over Rose-Hulman March 3.
Waters, a junior transfer from Ancilla College, tossed one-third of an inning in the first of five games in Clearwater, Fla. He walked one, but did not allow a hit as he earned the save.
He played third base in the team’s second game, a 5-0 win over Catholic March 3. He went 0-for-3 with a walk and scored a run.
He allowed three runs in the second half of the double-header against Catholic, a 9-3 defeat. He pitched one inning in a 5-1 loss to the College of New Jersey March 6, giving up four runs on two hits and two walks.
Joscie Kaup
The Fort Recovery graduate scored for the Syracuse softball team as it returned to action after two weeks off.
Kaup, who also plays volleyball for the Orange, entered the game as a pinch runner after a single by first baseman Melissa Kelly. She advanced to second on a walk by Tanya Rose, and scored after back-to-back singles from Chanel Roehner and Cassie Morales as Syracuse won 10-2.[[In-content Ad]]
