Middle school students win essay contest
Taking Note
Two East Jay Middle School eighth grade students have been named county winners of the 2009-2010 Dick Lugar/Indiana Farm Bureau/Farm Bureau Insurance Companies Agricutural Essay Contest.
Collin Saxman and Patricia Hein won for their essays with the theme "Farmers Looking at a Bright Future."
The students were to consider the growing global demand for food and energy resources and then creatively describe what farm life may look like for future generations.
They will compete at the district level at the Indiana Farm Bureau Spring Conference on March 12 and 13 in Indianapolis.

Jay County Public Library will have story times in January on Monday, Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 5, 12, 19 and 26 at 1 p.m.

Also share rhymes and music with Mother Goose on Friday, Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 10:30 a.m.

Activity calendars will be available at the library Jan. 4 through Jan. 16 to do fun adventures at home. When 15 activities are completed, a prize will be given.
Prizes must be claimed by Feb. 8.

Book reading group
The book group at Jay County Public Library will discuss the book "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
Walls tells the story of her childhood in a family headed by an eccentic mother and father.
New members are always welcome to the book group. For more information, call the library at (260) 726-7890.
Blood drive
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a blood drive on Monday, Dec. 28, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Bryant Wesleyan Church.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present identification.
