CONVERSE - Aly Miller showed her sectional championship form Tuesday.
Miller, a JCHS sophomore and the defending sectional champion, won the Oak Hill Invitational to lead the Jay County High School girls cross country team to a second-place finish.
The Patriots scored 62 points, finishing behind Western (30) and well ahead of Oak Hill (108) in the 11-team field.
JCHS's boys finished with a score of 236 for ninth place out of 13 teams, losing an eighth-place tiebreaker to Alexandria. Western won with 23 points, and Blackford was second at 96.
Miller set the pace in the girls race, posting a winning time of 20-minutes, 41 seconds. Eroica Stackhouse of Tipton was the runner-up in 20:53.
Amanda Johnson, a 2008 JCHS graduate, won the race last season.
The rest of the top five for the Patriots (25-3) all finished in the top 20, with senior Kylie Wellman returning after missing a race because of shin splints to place 11th in 22:06.
Her sophomore sister Leah Wellman was 14th at 22:32, Kari Hemmelgarn finished 17th with a time of 22:57 and Cassie Laux took 19th in 23:18.
Tevan Nichols was the only Patriot boy to finish in the top 40 as he placed 16th with a time of 18:19. Austin Bentz was next for the Patriots (7-21) in 45th at 20:02.
Branden Brinton took 61st in 20:32, Spencer Grady was 75th at 21:10 and Zach Johnson finished 90th in 22:42.
Also running for the JCHS girls were: Logan Laux (24th - 23:36), Liz Lennartz (26th - 23:49), Katie Simmons (31st - 24:06) and Kristen Selvey (35th - 24:26).
