It didn't take long for Sam Miller to fulfill his record-setting potential.
In the first meet of the season, the Jay County High School junior erased a school record in leading the Patriot boys swim team to a 180-128 victory over the visiting Bluffton Tigers. The JCHS girls team took first and third in the final race of the night to eke out a 159-156 victory.
Miller turned in the standout performance of the night, despite having no one to push him in the boys 200-yard individual medley. He was more than 20 seconds ahead of the field in setting a new Jay County record with a time of 2-minutes, 5.68 seconds.
Caleb Dann set the previous mark of 2:05.82 in 2002.
Miller also led a one-two finish in the 100 breaststroke, winning in 1:06.23 while teammate Aaron Hudson placed second in 1:08.49.
The girls portion of the meet came down to the final event as the Patriots trailed by five points. Michelle Landfair and Cori Vormohr rallied the A team to a victory by nearly six seconds, finishing in 4:19.44 along with Briann Saxman and April Acker, and the B team of Alysha Miller, Ivy Simons, Rachel Osterholt and Stephanie Skiver easily grabbed third in 4:42.33 to earn the three-point win.
Tom McCord, Vormohr and Landfair each joined Sam Miller in winning a pair of individual events.
McCord, a senior, helped the boys to their big victory by taking first place in the 100 and 200 freestyle events. He posted winning times of 51.44 and 1:57.24 respectively.
Landfair, a sophomore, turned in a career-best time of 1:00.19 in the girls 100 freestyle, and took the 50 freestyle in a season-best 28.06. Vormohr was first in her specialty events as well with a season-best 2:22.45 in the 200 individual medley and a time of 1:12.57 in the 100 breaststroke.
All four double winners were in on a pair of relay victories as well.
In addition to teaming for the win in the final event of the night, Vormohr and Landfair joined Alysha Miller and Saxman for first place in the 200 medley relay in 2:07.84.
McCord and Sam Miller joined Aaron Hudson and Chance Milligan in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:36.60.
