Miller wins at Troy

TROY, Ohio — Sawyer Miller stood out, but the Starfires finished in the middle of the pack.
Miller turned in the only top-four finish for the South Adams High School wrestling team at Saturday’s Troy Invitational, winning the 113-pound weight class as the Starfires placed 10th out of 19 teams with 129.5 points.
Miller, who finished fourth in the state at 106 pounds last season, dominated even in the championship match. He defeated Mount Vernon’s Tyler Davis by a 22-7 technical fall.
Matt Nussbaum (120) won his fifth-place match with a pin in 4:30 over Wayne’s Cassius Bailey, and Shea Pyle (160) defeated Newark’s Dan Pastorius 9-5 to also finish in fifth. Mavrick Morningstar (220) and Mason Morningstar (HWT) each finished in sixth place.
The Starfires were also fourth out of 17 teams on Dec. 29 at the Ben Davis Giant 16, with Mavrick Morningstar winning the 220-pound division.

Jay grapplers go 2-3
MONROE — Jay County’s wrestling team dropped as many matches Saturday as it had all season, finishing 2-3 at the Adams Central Duals.
JCHS defeated Snider 33-32 and Bluffton 60-14, but lost to Brownsburg 49-19, Bishop Dwenger 45-34 and the host Flying Jets 44-27.
Kyle Garringer (195), who is ranked fifth in the state, was the only competitor to go undefeated for the Patriots (17-6), posting a 5-0 record. He is 31-0 on the season.
Eric Hemmelgarn (HWT), who entered the day undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state, suffered his first loss of the year as he finished 4-1. He is 30-1 overall this season.
Also adding 4-1 records for Jay County were Alex Abbott (113), Connor Ray (120) and Zach Metcalf (160). Donnie Miller (220) finished 3-2.

SA drops 8th straight
BERNE — The South Adams boys basketball team couldn’t keep up with one of the highest scoring teams in the state as it fell 89-71 Saturday to the visiting Leo Lions.
Leo (5-4), which ranks third in the state at 78.4 points per game, took control as it outscored the Starfires 49-33 in the second and third quarters. The Lions launched 33 3-point attempts and made 14, compared to just three for SAHS.
Chase Mosser led four Starfires in double figures with 22 points, and Derek Wanner added 17 points and seven rebounds. Simon Sprunger totaled 11 points, and Cody Wickey notched 10 points and three assists.
Sam Waters paced five double-figure scorers for Leo with 25 points and added nine rebounds.
SAHS has lost eight in a row since defeating Union City and Daleville in its first two games of the season.

Cougars edge Fort
VAN VERT, Ohio — In a game that was close throughout, Fort Recovery’s girls basketball team was never able to claim control in the second half as it fell 46-45 to the Van Wert Cougars.
The Indians (9-2), who led for just 30 seconds in the second half, had a chance to pull even late. Kelsey Fiely hit a 3-pointer to cut their deficit to two in the final minute, and Tori Lennartz went to the free-throw line for two shots with 16 seconds left. But Lennartz missed the first free throw, and Van Wert (5-6) held on for the one-point win.
Fiely led Fort Recovery, which had won five in a row, with 15 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Lennartz had 13 points and eight boards.
Alexis Dowdy paced three Cougars in double figures with 15 points.
Kendra Siefring scored seven points in the junior varsity game to lead the Indians to a 35-27 victory.[[In-content Ad]]
