CITY ACCIDENTS

A Portland teenager was caught a short time after allegedly fleeing on foot from a single-vehicle accident Friday night in Portland.

A report by Portland police said that Nicholas A. Hart, 16, 925 N. Franklin St., lost control of the vehicle he was driving on West High Street, near Williams Street, and struck a parked car about 8:06 a.m.

The car driven by Hart went off the street and struck a tree at Judge Haynes Elementary School.

The report said that Hart and a passenger left the scene on foot and were stopped at Ship Street and Eagle Alley.

The report listed the consumption of alcoholic beverages as a contributing factor and listed Hart’s blood alcohol content as .03 percent.

Combined damage to the 1984 Ford Thunderbird driven by Hart and registered to Lance Stephen, 1421 North 300 West, and the parked 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier registered to Jim and Nancy Brown, 820 W. High St., Portland, was $2,500 to $5,000.

A sport utility vehicle driven by a rural Portland woman struck a payment collection box at a Portland car wash Sunday at 11:24 a.m.

Anna M. Patch, 24, 3418 North 150 East, told police she was backing up her SUV to straighten it before entering the automatic bay at the Shell car wash, 620 N. Meridian St.

Damage to the box and Patch’s 2000 Ford Explorer was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.

CHAIN REACTION

Three vehicles were involved in a chain reaction accident Saturday afternoon on Ind. 1 in Knox Township.

The accident occurred Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of county road 150 South.

Vehicles involved in the accident were driven by Nancy Jo LeMaster, 39, 2277 North 500 West, Pennville; Max Allen McClain Jr., 22, 3013 North Ind. 1, Pennville; and Brenda Ann Rowles, 27, 3618 West 200 North, Portland.

A report by Jay County police said that all three vehicles were northbound on Ind. 1, with Rowles’ vehicle first, followed by LeMaster and then McClain.

Rowles slowed for a vehicle that turned left suddenly onto county road 150 South. McClain could not stop in time to avoid hitting the rear of LeMaster’s 1996 Chevrolet Suburban, which was then pushed into the back of Rowles’ 1995 Plymouth Voyager.

Estimated damage of $5,000 to $10,000 was done to the 1998 Dodge Durango driven by McClain and registered to Max and Vicki McClain, same address as driver, and the vehicles driven by Rowles and LeMaster.

LeMaster’s Suburban also is registered to Kevin Sills, same address as driver, while the van driven by Rowles is registered to Dale R. Rowles, same address as driver.
