Rejected

Local 494 of the United Auto Workers rejected a contract proposal Friday, a move which is likely to lead to the closing of Union City Body Company.

The contract was rejected by a vote of 211 to 183.

Parent company Grand Vehicle Works issued a statement after the vote, saying, “We see no reason to change our current plan of closing Union City Body Company.”

Mercer County ranked first in farm income in Ohio for 2002, according to the Ohio Agricultural Statistics Service.

Preliminary figures for 2002, the most recent available, show Mercer County with $254,348,000 in total farm income. Livestock receipts were the key, with Mercer County first in hogs and poultry.

Darke County ranked first in corn and soybean income.

Mann files

Former Jay County High School teacher John L. Mann has filed as a candidate for the at-large seat on the South Adams School Board.

Mann, who retired from teaching in 2000, is a real estate broker. A 1961 graduate of Geneva High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University and his master’s degree from St. Francis College.

Sentenced

A Portland man was sentenced Feb. 17 in Jay Circuit Court on several felony charges.

Jeremy W. Kelly, 31, was sentenced for criminal confinement, a class B felony, and battery by means of deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and intimidation, all class C felonies.

For the criminal confinement charge, he was sentenced to 15 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. For battery by means of deadly weapon, he was sentenced to six years in the DOC. On the battery resulting in serious bodily injury charge, he was sentenced to six years in the DOC. For the intimidation charge, he was sentenced to six years in the DOC.

These sentences will run concurrently with credit for time served.

Kelly was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay $134 in court costs.

He was arrested on Sept. 24, 2002 by Jay County police for battering a Portland woman and keeping her at her home on Sept. 20, 2002.

Weather
