ICY MISHAP

Slick roads were a factor in a Jan. 18 accident in Mercer County involving a Fort Recovery teenager.

Megan N. Wenning, 17, 1066 Union City Road, was northbound on Burrville Road, when her car hit a patch of ice. The vehicle slid off the road and into a ditch, striking a utility pole. The car received heavy damage, but no injury was reported.

AREA COURTS

In Adams Superior Court recently, Chad D. Chaffins, 31, Geneva, was ordered to pay $135 in court costs and $45.47 in restitution after pleading guilty to check deception. He also received a suspended 60-day jail sentence.

In Bluffton City Court, Margaret Crouse, rural Dunkirk, was fined $108 for speeding, and Dean Taylor, Portland, was fined $90 for not having a valid driver’s license. A parking violation against Michelle Grigsby, Portland, was dismissed.

Jarvis Z. Payne, 44, Fort Recovery, was fined $23.50 in Celina Municipal Court for failure to yield the right-of-way when turning left.

FILE BANKRUPTCY

Among those filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis was Joseph D. Goodhew, Ridgeville, who listed debts of $223,774 and assets of $160,877.

ICY ACCIDENT

A Portland teen was involved in a one-vehicle accident Saturday morning on Ind. 67 in Greene Township.

Sterling Taylor, 17, 433 W. Arch St., was northbound on Ind. 67, just south of county road 75 South crossing the bridge over the Salamonie River, when he lost control of the pick-up truck he was driving. He was pulling a U-Haul trailer.

He told Jay County police his truck slid across the road, and its right front side struck the guard rail. The trailer then slid around and struck the guard rail on the same side.

Estimated damages to Taylor’s 1987 GMC S-15 and the trailer, registered to U-Haul Co., Fast Bay, Phoenix, Calif., were between $1,000 and $2,500.

MEETING

The Jay County High School Alumni Association will meet Thursday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the home of Debi Gillespie, 945 Boundary Pike, Portland.

Graduating classes to be honored this year are 1979, 1984, 1989, and 1994.

Anyone from these classes interested in helping with the 2004 Alumni Reunion is encouraged to attend. Anyone who would like to serve on the alumni board should contact Gillespie at (260) 726-7136 during the day or (260) 726-6255 in the evening.

GARAGE FIRE

A fire in a Portland man’s garage was out when Portland firefighters arrived on Saturday afternoon.

Portland Fire Department was called to a fire in a garage owned by Fred Franklin, 965 S. Bridge St., at 2:07 p.m. Saturday.

A spark from a welder started a small fire inside the garage, Portland Fire Chief Mike Thomas said this morning.

There was minor damage to the garage, Thomas added.

MEETING MOVED

A Tuesday, Feb. 3 Salamonia Town Board meeting has been rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 9.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the town’s fire station.[[In-content Ad]]
