Captions missing
Due to a pressroom error, four photo captions were missing from page one in Saturday's edition of The Commercial Review.
The young boy in the red, white, and blue hat waving to the parade is 5-year-old Seth Wilson of Portland.
The two men carrying a banner for Jay-Randolph Developmental Services are Rog Durham and Darren Martin.
The singer at the Jay County Fairgrounds in an American flag shirt is Carl Pase, Bluffton.
And the two World War II veterans driving a Jeep in the Fourth of July parade are Art Hall and Dr. Eugene Gillum.
Meeting cancelled
The Jay-Randolph Developmental Services monthly board meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled.
Items recovered
Portland police recovered several lawn ornaments this morning that have been stolen from yards.
Several items were found at county road 300 East and Division Road. Police have been investigating more than 20 reports of lawn ornament thefts during the past week.
Recovered were a statue of a frog sitting on a chair; a crème-colored stand with a broken blue gazing ball on top; a green frog stand with a blue gazing ball on top; a small cherub; a statue of a boy and girl; a multicolored gazing ball with a gray stand; a blue and white lighthouse; a fawn flower pot; a cherub with a silver ball; two wooden Uncle Sam statues and a wooden Dutch girl statue. An orange cone belonging to the city of Portland also was found with the items.
The items were recovered about 4:15 a.m.
In a related matter, another lawn ornament theft was reported Sunday.
Esther Strait, 101 N. Park St., Portland, told police a rooster statue was stolen from her yard. The theft occurred between midnight and 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
Value of the statue was estimated at $100.
Juvenile detained
A Portland teenager has been taken to the Youth Opportunity Center, Muncie, for allegedly striking a man with a tire iron.
The 16-year-old female allegedly struck Alfred Coy, 720 W. Walnut St., on the face, causing minor injuries. The incident occurred early Saturday morning. The teenager also was referred to the Jay County Probation Department.
Battery resulting in bodily injury, a class D felony when committed by an adult, is considered an act of delinquency when committed by a juvenile, Portland police said.
Three-vehicle accident
Three vehicles collided at Votaw and Williams streets in Portland Thursday at 4:29 p.m.
A 1999 Buick Century driven by Marla S. Vermillian, 52, 8533 South 600 East, Portland, a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Tabitha E. Hoose, 16, 166 Columbia St., Berne, and a 1989 Dodge Caravan driven by Edward A. Wellman, 52, 7775 North 650 East, Bryant, collided.
Vermillian told Portland police she was driving south on Williams Street and waiting for a vehicle headed east on Votaw Street to pass. The vehicle driven by an unknown person turned into the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot, so she began to turn onto Votaw Street. At the same time, Hoose was driving west on Votaw Street.
Hoose swerved and tried to avoid hitting Vermillian, but instead hit Wellman who was stopped on Williams Street, headed south. Her vehicle then hit a traffic control sign. Vermillian's vehicle was not hit.
Combined damage to the sign, owned by the Indiana Department of Transportation, the Pontiac, also registered to Frank Hoose, same address, and the Dodge, also registered to Linda Wellman, same address, was estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
Parking lot accident
A vehicle driven by a Portland man hit a parked car at the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 650 W. Votaw St., Portland, on Sunday.
Richard A. Stewart, 47, 710 W. Arch St., told Portland police he was backing from a parking space and hit a 1989 Honda Accord parked behind him.
The 11:45 a.m. accident caused combined damage to Stewart's 1989 GMC Safari and the Honda, registered to Mary K. Reynolds, 208 E. Race St., Portland, that was estimated at less than $1,000.
Hits post
A broken down vehicle struck a post in Portland Thursday at 4:05 p.m.
Paul A. Hutzler, 2345 South 425 East, Portland, told police the 1991 Chevrolet Blazer broke down and he was pushing it into a parking space at Hayes Park, along Western Avenue. When he got it into the parking space, the vehicle rolled forward off the parking area and struck a post.
Combined damage to the vehicle, registered to Gary and Christie Ross, 401 Canterbury Lane, Apt. 18, Portland, and the post, owned by the city of Portland, 321 N. Meridian St., was estimated at less than $1,000.
Utility pole hit
A vehicle driven by a Bryant woman was damaged Thursday when it struck a utility pole in Portland.
Tavia N. Boolman, 21, 306 E. Main St., told Portland police she was backing out of a parking space at the Youth Service Bureau Residential Care Facility, located in an alley west of Pleasant Street. The 2006 Chevrolet van struck a utility pole.
The accident occurred at 10:20 a.m.
Damage to the van, registered to Youth Service Bureau of Jay County, 603 W. Arch St., was estimated at less than $1,000.
Deer hit
A rural Portland man's vehicle received damage estimated at less than $1,000 when it hit a deer in Jackson Township on Sunday.
Jason L. Shawver, 26, 1452 West 200 North, told Jay County police he was driving east on Ind. 18, just west of county road 650 West. A deer ran onto the road and he could not avoid hitting it with his 1998 Chevrolet pick-up truck.
The accident occurred at 11:15 p.m.
Cash stolen
A rural Dunkirk woman told police that someone stole $900 in cash from her purse.
Loretta Fry, 8710 West 300 South, said she keeps her purse at her side at all times and beside her bed when she sleeps. About 7 a.m. Sunday, she discovered that the cash was missing. She last saw it Thursday.
Fry told Jay County police she may know who took the money.
Case taken
A rural Portland resident reported the theft of her cigarette case on Friday.
Rhonda Roth, 1096 South 500 West, said the theft occurred at Pit's Cocktail Lounge, 214 N. Meridian St., Portland. She left the case at her table while she was in the restroom. When she returned, it was gone.
The case contained her driver's license, credit card and $200 cash.
