Felony arrests
Accused of auto theft
A rural Portland man was arrested Sunday morning on several charges - including automobile theft, a class D felony.
Andrew J. Bailey, 21, 1072 East Ind. 26, also was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, and driving while license suspended and driving while intoxicated, both class A misdemeanors.
Portland resident Candi L. Smith, 108 W. Second St., reported to Portland police that her 1996 Dodge Avenger was stolen about 12:35 a.m. on Sunday. A Jay County police officer saw a vehicle matching that description near High and Commerce streets. The officer stopped the vehicle on Harrison Street at 1:04 a.m.
Bailey admitted to stealing the vehicle, police said. Police also allegedly found clonazepam not prescribed to Bailey inside the vehicle. A blood-alcohol test also was conducted on Bailey.
He was released from the Jay County Jail Sunday on a $9,000 bond.
Arrested for theft
A Portland woman was arrested Sunday night for allegedly stealing high water signs and a cone owned by the city of Portland.
Elizabeth B. Walker, 18, 645 W. Second St., was arrested by Portland police on a charge of theft, a class D felony.
On Sunday, Portland police received a report that a witness had seen someone in a car stealing the signs at West Arch and Grand streets. Police found a vehicle matching that description and stopped the vehicle at Arch and Middle streets. Police allegedly found three high water signs and an orange cone belonging to the city inside the vehicle.
A 17-year-old female from Portland, and a 17-year-old female from Dunkirk, who also were inside the vehicle, were referred to the Jay County Probation Department. Theft, a felony for an adult, is considered an act of delinquency when committed by a juvenile.
Value of the signs and cone was estimated at $195.
Walker was released from the Jay County Jail Sunday on a $3,000 bond.
Arrested for possession
A Redkey man was arrested Friday morning for allegedly possessing hydrocodone not prescribed to him.
Anthony A. Neely, 26, 58 E. Charles St., was arrested by Jay County police for possession of a schedule III controlled substance, a class D felony.
A deputy in Redkey allegedly saw Neely and two others conduct some sort of transaction at High and Main streets. The two others left, and the officer searched Neely and allegedly found that he possessed hydrocodone.
He was being held in the Jay County Jail this morning with no bond set because he was out on bond for another crime.[[In-content Ad]]
