Sale ending

A county tax sale for about 80 properties is ending Tuesday.

The sale is being held as an online auction at www.sri-taxsale.com and will end at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Those interested should click on "Jay Sale" to find the listings.

Payments must be made by noon Wednesday or the winning bidder will face a 25 percent penalty. Payments can be made via wire transfer to a tax sale account, which can be found under the "Payment Terms" tab on the sale site, or in person at the Jay County Auditor's office.

Winning bidders will be awarded a certificate and must follow proper procedure to obtain title to the property.

Deadline

Those wishing to vote in the May primary election must register to vote at the Jay County Clerk's office by April 5. Absentee voting for the primary will also begin on that same day.

Kerosene in sewer

A report of an odor of kerosene at a home in Portland led to the discovery of the substance in the city's sewer system Sunday morning.

Portland firefighters were called to the home of David C. Vasquez, 816 W. Water St., at 1:05 a.m., after he smelled kerosene in his home.

Firefighters determined the odor was coming from the drain for his washing machine, and called the wastewater treatment plant.

A plant official arrived at the scene at 1:58 a.m. and determined that kerosene had somehow gotten into the city's sewer system.

There was only a small amount of kerosene in the sewer system, which may have been caused by an accidental spill or leak, said wastewater treatment plant superintendent Ron Krieg.

He said there was not enough kerosene to damage the treatement system, and heavy rainfall helped dilute the chemical.

Firefighters left the scene at 2:10 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
