Capsule Reports

Line starts fire

A downed power line ignited a fire Sunday that heavily damaged a Dunkirk man's home.

A thunderstorm caused a power line to fall onto another electrical line connected to the home of Allen Mettler, 341 N. Franklin St. The incident caused an electrical surge in Mettler's home, which started a fire and knocked out power in the city.

The fire was reported at 8:53 a.m. Firefighters overheard the call on a police scanner and went to the scene. Because the power was out, Dunkirk's fire repeater could not be used to page firefighters to the scene. Telephone service also was out, a firefighter said this morning. The fire was reported via cellular phone.

The first Dunkirk firefighters arrived at the scene at 9 a.m. Twenty firefighters responded with two trucks. The fire was controlled at 9:38 a.m.

Ten Redkey firefighters assisted at the scene and brought one truck.

Power was restored to the city about 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

A Portland man told police someone stole cash from his home.

Josh Teeter, 600 S. Meridian St., Apt. 211, said $40 to $50 in cash was taken from his wallet between noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Teeter told Portland police he was not home when the theft occurred. Someone also opened the dresser drawers in his bedroom, he said.

Stolen from business

An employee of a rural Pennville business told police that someone stole a lockbox containing $130 to $150 in cash from the business.

Jim Coolidge, an employee of Pennville Sand and Gravel, located on county road 750 West, said the box was stolen from inside the office.

Before the theft was detected, Coolidge saw someone in a small, blue pick-up truck leaving the business. The vehicle was hauling scrap metal, conveyer rollers and some old metal components of a catwalk, he told Jay County police. Coolidge called police Saturday at 6:20 p.m.
