Arrested
A Coldwater, Ohio man accused of burglarizing two rural Jay County homes turned himself in to Jay County police on Sunday.
A Jay Circuit Court warrant was issued on Thursday for the arrest of Brian K. Powell, 41, 5258 St. Henry-Burkettsville Road.
He was arrested for two counts of burglary, both class B felonies. Both incidents were reported on April 14 by rural Portland residents Larry Landon, 398 North 600 East, and Beth LeMaster, 1239 North 800 East.
Powell was arrested and bonded out of jail last week in Ohio for allegedly committing several burglaries in Mercer County.
He was released later Sunday from the Jay County Jail on $30,000 bond.
Delayed bills
The spring installment of property tax bills, which would normally be due this week, won’t be due until possibly early July, a county official said this morning.
Delays in the completion of reassessment have held up billing.
Jay County treasurer Robin Alberson said this morning that several people have called or come to her office concerned they haven’t received their property tax bills, despite the well-publicized delay in reassessment.
Residents who will owe property taxes this year may pay the amount they paid last year. New bills or credits will be issued for the difference between the amount owed in 2002 and this year.
For more information, call the treasurer’s office at (260) 726-7007.
