WINDOW DAMAGED

A rural Portland home was damaged Monday when a wagon came unhitched from the vehicle it was being towed by and crashed into the house, located in Greene Township.

Rural Portland resident Dan L. Dirksen told Jay County police he driving on county road 200 South when the hitch on the wagon he was towing came loose. The wagon traveled off of the north side of the road and struck a utility pole, then continued into a yard and collided with a window in the residence located at 4586 West 200 South.

According to police, no one was home at the time of the incident.

Police did not identify the owner of the home.

COUNTY ACCIDENT

A semi-truck driven by a Lockport, N.Y., man went off of the road and struck a utility pole today at 3:08 a.m. in Greene Township.

Dennis E. Mioduck, 23 Oliver St., said he was slowing down for a curve eastbound on Ind. 26 near county road 300 west when the truck began to hydroplane.

The 1998 Kenworth truck slid off of the southeast corner of the intersection and into the ditch. The truck continued to slide and struck a utility pole, owned by Sprint.

Damage to the truck and trailer, registered to George H. Golding Inc., 241 S. Niagra St., Lockport, N.Y., was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.

CITY ACCIDENT

A car driven by a Portland woman collided with a parked car on Sunday at 12:24 p.m.

Anita K. Young, 63, 407 W. Twelfth St., told Portland police she was backing out of a driveway on West Twelfth Street when she struck a 1991 Chevrolet Beretta, registered to Brian J. Ison, 403 W. Twelfth St., Portland.

Damage to Young’s 2001 Buick car and Ison’s car was estimated between $750 and $1,000.

DEER ACCIDENTS

A van driven by a rural Portland woman collided with a deer in Jefferson Township on Monday at 6:15 p.m.

Cynthia M. Pyle, 41, 1610 West 650 South, was driving west on county road 600 South about 1,500 feet west of county road 250 West, when a deer came onto the road. Pyle told police that she could not avoid striking the deer with her 1998 Chevrolet van, causing damage estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

A semi-truck driven by a Poneto man stuck a deer in Knox Township on Saturday at 4:20 p.m.

Todd M. Osborn, 37, 2738 West 800 South, told Jay County police he was driving north on Ind. 167, about 1,000 feet north of county road 150 South, when a deer came onto the road.

Damage to the 1995 semi, registered to Osborn Feed and Grain Inc., 240 W. Windsor St., Montpelier, was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

A 1996 GMC Jimmy driven by a Portland man struck a deer in Jackson Township on Saturday at 2:30 a.m.

Tom R. Pritchard, 233 E. Arch St., told Jay County police he was driving east on Ind. 18, about 500 feet east of county road 100 West, when the deer came onto the road. He was unable to avoid striking the deer and caused damage to his sport utility vehicle estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

THEFTS REPORTED

A Portland woman reported Monday morning to Portland police that several items were stolen from her car. Her wallet was later located at a Portland store.

Danielle Lewis, 136 E. Adams St., told police that her wallet containing $44 in cash, a birth certificate, and her and her daughter’s social security cards was stolen along with three packs of cigarettes sometime between 7 p.m. Sunday and 5:30 a.m. Monday. Later Monday, she received a call from an employee from Lobill Foods that her wallet had been found there.

The bicycle reported stolen Saturday by Portland man was later recovered.

Bobby Goodman, 215 W. Water St., told Portland police Saturday that the bike was stolen.

He called police several hours later to report that the bike was borrowed and returned to his home.

A Portland man reported a theft from his vehicle sometime on Friday.

Bryan Waters, 815 W. North St., told Portland Police that between $3 and $4 in change was stolen from the ashtray of his 1988 Chevrolet truck while it was parked in front of his residence on Friday.

Waters also told police that the suspect has tried to gain entry to a shed by kicking on the door.

While the suspect did not get inside the shed, there was exterior damage to the door.

OFFICE VISITS

The mobile office of congressman Mike Pence is scheduled to visit Portland city hall on Wednesday, Nov. 19.

The mobile office will stop at city hall, located at 321 N. Meridian St., from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
