House fire
An electrical short ignited a fire in Redkey Thursday that caused moderate damage.
Redkey firefighters were called to the home of Mike and Sharon Sheward, 14 N. Meridian St., at 7:44 p.m. The first firefighters arrived at the scene at 7:47 p.m. Nineteen firefighters responded with four trucks.
The fire was controlled at 7:57 p.m. Firefighters left the scene about 10 p.m.
A Redkey firefighter said there was fire, smoke and water damage to the interior of the home, but it was not destroyed.
The fire began under the floor in the center of the house, a firefighter said.

Deer accidents
Jay County police investigated one vehicle-deer accident Friday and another on Sunday.
The first accident occurred at 6:13 p.m. Friday in Greene Township.
Karen S. Leuthold, 49, 6263 East Ind. 67, Bryant, told Jay County police she was driving west on Ind. 26, near county road 650 West, and a deer ran onto the road. She struck it with her 2005 Pontiac Montana, causing damage estimated at $1,000 to $2,500.
The other accident occurred Sunday at 9:45 a.m. in Wayne Township.
Margie R. Addington, 37, 815 West Division Road, Union City, told police she was driving south on U.S. 27, south of county road 275 South, and a deer ran onto the road and struck the driver’s side of her 1999 Dodge Neon. Damage was estimated at less than $1,000.

Sanders,
wheels stolen
A rural Portland man told police that someone stole items from his garage and barn.
Rex Baldauf, 4694 East 600 South, told Jay County police that two antique floor sanders and four steel wheels for an Allis Chalmers tractor were stolen about two weeks ago.
He reported the theft Friday at 2:40 p.m.
Grass fire
Sparks from equipment on a utility pole caught a small amount of grass on fire in Pike Township on Sunday.
Portland firefighters were called county road 800 South, between U.S. 27 and county road 100 West, at 2:15 p.m.
The firefighter arrived at 2:27 p.m. and left the scene at 2:53 p.m.

Trailer stolen
Someone stole a single-axle trailer from a rural Portland man’s pole barn.
Phil Laux, 5113 East 300 North, said the trailer belongs to Frank Dues.
The theft was reported Sunday at 7:09 p.m.

Nuts and bolts stolen
A rural Portland man called police Sunday and said nuts and bolts were stolen from a tackle box in his trailer.
Theodore Davis, 3433 East 700 South, told Jay County police that the theft occurred sometime before 2:51 p.m. on Sunday.

Mailbox hit
A rural Dunkirk resident’s mailbox was hit by a vehicle sometime on Friday.
Brandon Jacobs, 8352 West 200 South, contacted Jay County police Saturday at 9:28 p.m.

Healthcare seminar
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce is taking reservations for a healthcare reform seminar.
The seminar is $20 for chamber members and $30 for non-members. The event will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Community Resource Center.
