The Indiana General Assembly voted unanimously today to confirm Kathy Davis as lieutenant governor, The Associated Press reported.

The Republican-ruled Indiana Senate voted 48-0 to confirm Davis, while the Democrat-led House approved her nomination in a unanimous voice vote.

Davis, a seasoned government manager who was nominated by Democratic Gov. Joe Kernan on Oct. 9, will be the first woman to serve either as Indiana’s governor or lieutenant governor.

Arrested

A Muncie man was arrested by Dunkirk police on a felony charge of driving after being designated a habitual traffic violator for life and misdemeanor driving while intoxicated.

Samuel L. Pinkston, 38, 2027 E. Memorial Drive, was arrested for the class C felony and the class A misdemeanor, after he was pulled over by Dunkirk police. Pinkston’s driver’s license is suspended for life.

He was being held at the Jay County Jail this morning on $15,000 bond.

Boil it

The Dunkirk Water Department issued a boil order at 11 a.m. today while work is being done on reservoirs and tanks in an effort to eliminate rust problems.

Dunkirk residents should boil water before drinking it during the repair work. Officials estimate the boil order could remain in effect through Thursday.

Voting

Residents of cities and towns in Jay County which are holding elections this fall may vote absentee in the Jay County Courthouse.

Absentee voting will be held in the election room at the courthouse, which is just inside the south entrance. Hours are 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Hours on Monday, Nov. 3 will be 8 a.m. to noon.

Municipalities holding general elections on Tuesday, Nov. 4 include Portland, Dunkirk, Bryant and Salamonia.

A change in state law allows registered voters to vote absentee for any reason.

Weather

Tonight should be partly cloudy, with lows in the mid 50s. The outlook for Tuesday calls for mostly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 60s. Tuesday night will cool off, with lows dropping into the upper 30s.

The Portland weather observation station recorded a high Sunday of 65 and a low of 41. It was 50 at 7 a.m. today.

Wednesday should be partly cloudy, with highs in the mid 50s. Lows Wednesday night will be in the mid 30s, under partly cloudy skies.

On Thursday, the forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions and highs in the mid 50s. Lows Thursday night should be around 40.

On Friday, look for partly cloudy skies and highs in the lower 60s.
