William Bailey, 86, Portland, was driving south on Ind. 67 when a two-vehicle collision that occurred in Richland Township on Tuesday at 2:23 p.m.
Charles Garlinger, 27, Portland, was driving west on county road 600 South approaching the intersection of Ind. 67 when he failed to yield the right of way and collided with Bailey’s vehicle.
Garlinger was cited by police for failing to yield.
Information about the accident provided by Indiana State Police was incorrect.
FLUSHING
The Portland Water Department will be flushing fire hydrants in the city during the late evening and overnight hours the remainder of this week.
Hydrants will be flushed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting tonight and continuing through Friday at 6 a.m.
During those hours there may be some discoloration of water. Residents may want to avoid doing laundry during these times, and those doing so should check for discoloration beforehand.
FIVE INJURED
Five people including a 3-week-old baby were injured in a two-vehicle head-on collision on Saturday at 12:28 p.m. on East Water Street in Portland
All five were transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service to Jay County Hospital.
Driver Janette Woodard, 74, 14100 East 1100 North, Dunkirk, was treated for a cut nose and chest pains. Driver Susanna Zebelle, 23, 300 E. South St., Pennville, was treated for a broken ankle and head pain.
Rachel Hawk, 22, 20400 North Ind. 3, Eaton, suffered a cut chin and her son Alex Hawk, three-weeks-old, suffered an abrasion to his head, according to information from Indiana State Police. They were passenger’s in Woodard’s car.
Also injured was Randall Romer, 21, 9324 West Ind. 26, Dunkirk, was treated for a cut above his eye. Romer was a passenger in Zebelle’s car.
Woodard was driving west on Water Street near the intersection of Morton Street. Zebelle told police she was driving east on Water Street.
According to ISP, Woodard crossed the center line for an unknown reason and struck Zebelle’s 1991 Chevrolet Berreta head on. Woodard was cited by police for driving left of center.
Damage to Woodard’s 1989 Chrysler car and Zebelle’s car was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.
CITY ACCIDENT
A moped driven by a Portland man struck a dog on Sunday at 3:20 p.m. on Ben Hawkins St.
Homer Butcher, Jr., 77, 310 W. 7th St., was driving north on Ben Hawkins St., near a residence at 1001 N. Ben Hawkins St., when his moped crashed. Butcher told police he did not know what happened. A witness to the accident, William L. Stewart, 1001 N. Ben Hawkins St., told police that his dog ran into the moped, causing it to crash.
Damage to the 1978 Yardman moped was estimated at less than $750.
COUNTY ACCIDENTS
A vehicle driven by a Portland woman slid into a ditch today at 6:29 a.m. in Noble Township.
Lyndi J. Evans, 24, 3544 E. Ind. 26, told Jay County police that she was westbound on county road 300 North, less than a half mile west of county road 800 East, when she swerved to avoid a eastbound vehicle that was driving in the middle of the road. Evans said she lost control of her 1998 Honda Civic. It slid sideways into a ditch on the south side of the road, then rolled and hit a fence.
The fence was property of Joe and Karla Raier, 7855 East 300 North, Portland.
Damage was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000.
A Pennville teenager lost control of his vehicle on Friday at 12:10 p.m. in Jackson Township.
Randy J. Batten, 17, 260 E. Second St., told police he was eastbound on county road 650 North, near the intersection of county road 100 West, when he took his eyes off the road. When Batten looked back at the road he was left of center and lost control of the vehicle when he swerved back to the right. His 1993 Ford Escort slid off the south side of the road where it rolled several times in a field.
Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.
Vehicles driven by a Portland woman and a Dunkirk women collided Sunday at 10 a.m. in Greene Township.
Debra K. Haffner, 40, 3887 West 500 South, Portland, told Jay County police that she was stopped facing east at the intersection of county roads 50 South and 400 West. Haffner said that because of a glare she could not see another vehicle northbound on county road 400 West. She proceeded into the intersection where her vehicle collided with a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird driven by Jennifer L. Roser, 21, 314 N. Shatto St., Dunkirk. Roser was northbound on county road 400 West and was unable to avoid the collision.
Haffner was driving a 1987 Pontiac Bonneville, and damage to both vehicles was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
Tread from a blown truck tire struck and damaged a vehicle driven by a St. Henry, Ohio resident Friday at 5:55 p.m. Friday in Bearcreek Township.
Rose M. Evers, 56, 491 Park St., told Jay County police she was westbound on Ind. 67 when a semi in front of her blew a tire, and the tread from the tire hit her vehicle. The semi was driven by Donald William Kohlhoff, Jr., 5775 Mellinger Dr., Saginaw, Mich.
The damage to Evers’ 2001 Dodge Stratus was estimated between $750 and $1,000.
DEER ACCIDENTS
A vehicle driven by a Muncie woman collided with a deer Sunday at 6:50 p.m. in Jefferson Township.
Renita S. Cox, 41, 2501 Brookway Drive, told Jay County police she was traveling northeast on Mt. Pleasant Road, just southwest of county road 400 South, when she was unable to avoid a deer that entered the road.
Damage to her 1998 Ford Taurus was estimated between $750 and $1,000.
A Redkey woman was unable to avoid a deer on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. in Richland Township.
Nicole Brook Harmon, 23, 500 E. Sheridan St., told county police she was westbound on county road 500 South, less than a mile west of Ind. 1, when she was unable to avoid a deer that entered the road from the south side.
Damage to the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

Forrest Luther Williamson, 67, told county police he was westbound on Ind. 18, a half mile east of county road 250 West, when he was unable to avoid a deer that entered the roadway from the north side.
Williamson was driving a 1995 Chevrolet 1500 that sustained an estimated $2,500 to $5,000 in damages.
THEFT
A rural Portland man reported a cassette player stolen from his vehicle sometime between 8 p.m. on Saturday and 12:55 a.m. Sunday.
Paul Barger II, 1321 East 500 South, Portland, told Portland police that he left his car parked near the intersection of Main and Commerce streets around 8 p.m. on Saturday. When he returned around 1 a.m. on Sunday his driver’s side window had been broken out and his Pioneer cassette player was missing.
The cassette player was valued between $10 and $15.
MISCHIEF
A Portland woman reported Saturday at 3:13 p.m. that somebody had put sugar in the gas tank of her vehicle.
Kristen Derringer, 940 W. Main St., told Portland Police that sometime after 1 a.m. on Saturday an unknown person had put sugar in the gas tank of her 1994 Mercury Topaz. The car had been parked in the rear of her residence.
VANDALISM
A Portland gas station reported vandalism to its gas pumps sometime between midnight and 6 a.m. on Saturday.
Jerry Stone, an employee from Swifty Oil, 803 N. Meridian St., told Portland police that sometime early Saturday morning somebody had punctured the gas hoses on two of the pumps at the station.[[In-content Ad]]
