George Hanlin
George E. “Ace” Hanlin Jr., 78, 9105 West Balbec Road, Pennville, the long-time owner and operator of Hanlin Well Drilling and the president of the Jay County Board of Zoning Appeals, died Sunday morning at his home.
Hanlin was the third generation owner of the business, which is now operated by his son, Perry Hanlin.
Hanlin was past president and member of Central Indiana Tractor Puller’s Association, and a member of Bro Shadow Club.
Hanlin was instrumental in improving many items related to the drilling business and automotive field. One of his special interests was the protection of the ground water supply.
He was a long-time contributor of geological information that became permanent record in the survey maps of Indiana Geology.
Born March 5, 1925, in Jay County, he was the son of George E. Sr. and Edwina (Edmondson) Hanlin. He was married in 1946 to Esther Axe, who died in 1999.
A graduate of Portland High School, Hanlin was a member of the St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Montpelier.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Steven (Peggy Ann) Manor, New Castle; two sons, Patrick Hanlin, Pennville, and Perry Hanlin, Bryant; four sisters, Mrs. Charles (Ellen) Bulzone, Staten Island, N.Y., Nina Stultz, Montpelier, Martha Kimmel, Pennville, and Mrs. Dee (Carolyn) Hoffacker, Liberty Center; one brother, John Hanlin, Pennville; an adopted son, Jessie Hinshaw, Pennville; an adopted daughter, Jenny Schisler, Pennville; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Thursday in the Glancy Funeral Homes Walker Chapel at Montpelier with the Rev. Bob Moran officiating. Burial will be in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery at Montpelier.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Fidella N. Kochersperger, 97, a resident of AmeriCare Living Center, Portland, died Sunday evening at the center.
Arrangements are pending at the Portland Chapel of the Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
Jerlean Pro
Jerlean “Jeri” Pro, 69, a former resident of Bryant, died Friday evening at the home of her daughter in New Jersey. Mrs. Pro had been living in Venice, Fla.
She was a licensed practical nurse and worked as a phlebotomist.
She was a member of the Portland Moose Lodge, Portland Eagles Lodge, and attended the Baptist Church.
Born Feb. 4, 1934, in Tennessee, she was the daughter of George and Nora (Melton) Masters. She was married in 1951 to William Pro who died in 1982.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Kurt (Lisa) Menner, Oakland, N.J., and Lori Pro, Decatur; two half-sisters, Mrs. Jack (Nora) Tharp, Union City, and Mrs. Frank (Mary) Layman, Arcadia, Fla.; one stepsister, Lucile Smiley, Muncie; and six grandchildren.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Friday in the Baird-Freeman Funeral Home. Burial will be in Gravel Hill Cemetery west of Bryant. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
