THREE INJURED

A rural Portland man was arrested after an accident on Saturday at 10:02 a.m. in Pike Township that injured three people.

Nicholas L. Schmit, 21, 3391 South Mount Pleasant Road, was arrested for class D felony driving while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury and failure to yield, an infraction.

Thomas E. Liedtky, 59, 7215 West 850 South, North Judson, Mark Huntsman, 20, 3041 South 600 East, Portland, and Shirley Liedtky, 58, 7215 West 850 South, North Judson, were transported by Jay Emergency Medical Service for their injuries. Thomas Liedtky complained of chest pain, and Hutsman, who was a passenger in Schmit’s vehicle, reported neck injuries. Shirley Liedtky injured her upper leg, according to the police report. Shirley Liedtky was transported to Parkview Hospital and later released. Thomas Liedtky and Huntsman were treated at Jay County Hospital and released, a spokesperson for county police said.

Schmit told Jay County police he was driving east on county road 650 South approaching U.S. 27 and failed to stop at the intersection. His 1996 Dodge Ram entered the intersection and struck a 2004 Dodge Stratus driven by Thomas Liedtky. Schmit’s truck rolled once before striking a house on the northwest corner of the intersection. Liedtky’s car spun around and came to rest in a ditch on the northwest side of the intersection.

A stop sign owned by Indiana State Highway Department and a house owned by Joanne Smitley, 024 East 650 South, Portland, were damaged.

Damage to the Schmit’s truck and Liedtky’s car, registered to LaPorte Chrysler, 1309 Pine Lake Road, LaPorte, was between $10,000 and $25,000. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

GREASE FIRE

Firefighters from the Portland Fire Department were called to a grease fire at Bandido’s, 1604 N. Meridian St., in Portland today at 10:07 a.m.

A deep fryer was damaged by the fire.

Eight firefighters responded with two trucks.

TIRES DAMAGED

Two tires on a Portland man’s vehicle were cut sometime Saturday morning.

Tom Bailey, 119 E. North St., told Portland police that both passenger side tires on his vehicle were slashed sometime between 1 and 7 a.m. on Saturday.

He reported the incident to police at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

CROP DAMAGED

A rural Portland man reported crop damage to Jay County police on Friday.

Robert Bailey, 1355 South 600 West, told police that a vehicle drove through his cornfield located at county road 200 North, just west of county road 250 West.

BICYCLIST INJURED

A Portland man was injured Thursday morning after an unknown vehicle collided with his bicycle then drove from the scene.

James D. Bost, 45, 997 Boundary Pike, Portland, was ejected from his bicycle after being hit by a car at 10 a.m.

He suffered abrasions in the accident.

Bost told Portland police he was riding his bicycle southbound on Wayne Street near Main Street in Portland when he was struck by a white four-door Buick Skylark driven by a white man, approximately 40 years old with brown hair and mustache.

The suspect left the scene northbound on Wayne Street.

COUNTY ACCIDENTS

Jay County police investigated a two-vehicle accident Thursday night at 8:35 p.m. on county road 250 West near county road 400 South in Jefferson Township.

Larry J. Moore, 62, 4310 South 250 West, Portland, told police his truck was parked at the intersection of county roads 400 South and 250 West after breaking down when his truck was struck by a passing car driven by Sharon L. Brown, 56, 516 W. Water St., Portland.

Brown told police she was northbound on 250 West and saw headlights in the southbound lane, so she drove to the far right of the northbound lane and didn’t see Moore’s truck.

Estimated damages to Moore’s 1986 GMC Sierra and Brown’s 1993 Oldsmobile Eighty-eight were between $2,500 and $5,000.

On Sunday at 6:55 a.m. in Noble Township, Christine L. Conner, 26, 716 W. Walnut St., Portland, was eastbound on county road 200 South, just east of county road 425 East, when she came upon a deer in the roadway. Conner told police she swerved to avoid colliding with it and went into a ditch on the north side of the road and hit a pole owned by American Electric Power.

Estimated damage to the 1993 Pontiac Grand Prix, registered to Vernon L. Dull, 969 S. Chicago Ave., Portland, was between $1,000 and $2,500. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

In another accident Sunday, Michael J. Thompson, 35, 0140 West 800 South, Poneto, lost control of his truck on county road 900 South near Ind. 1 in Penn Township.

Thompson told police he was eastbound on 900 South when he attempted to stop at the intersection of Ind. 1. He lost control of his vehicle on the rain-slickened road and struck a utility pole owned by American Electric Power and the stop sign owned by the Indiana State Highway Department.

Estimated damage to Thompson’s 1992 Chevrolet S-10 was between $1,000 and $2,500.

CITY ACCIDENT

Two vehicles were involved in an accident Sunday at 12:44 p.m. on Industrial Park Drive in Portland.

Kendra E. Stump, 18, 14045 Fort Recovery-Hillgrove Road, Fort Recovery, told Portland police her car was overheating and she was attempting to turn into the Portland Forge Federal Credit Union from Industrial Park Drive when her car was struck by a car driven by Michael J. Minch, 17, 1528 West 350 South, Portland.

Minch told police that Stump’s car was moving too slow and didn’t have a turn signal on, so he attempted to pass on the right and collided with the Stump vehicle.

Estimated damages to the 1986 Chrysler LeBaron, registered to Dwight A. Stump, same address as driver, and the 1997 Buick Century, registered to Marilyn A. Minch, same address as driver, were between $750 and $1,000.

DECATUR COLLISION

A rural Decatur woman and a Bryant man were involved in a two vehicle collision on Wednesday at 2:54 p.m.

Sandra J. Myers, 52, rural Decatur, told Decatur police she was stopped at the intersection of Washington and Thirteen streets.

She attempted to back up to make room for a semi to turn and failed to see the car, driven by Daniel N. Schindler, 40, Bryant, that was stopped behind Myers’ vehicle. She backed into the Schindler’s car.

Damaged to the two vehicles was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.

MAILBOX VANDALISM

A mailbox owned by a rural Portland man was reported damaged on Sunday morning.

Albert Elliott, 3996 West 600 South, told Jay County police that someone struck his mailbox with a pipe.

ADAMS ACCIDENT

A Portland woman was involved in an accident in Adams County on Thursday at 12:15 p.m.

Adams County police reported that a vehicle driven by Jessica M. Fravel, 21, Fremont, was stopped at the intersection of county road 950 South and U.S. 27 waiting for traffic to clear.

She told police she thought she was in the path of a truck waiting to make a left-hand turn onto the road so she moved into the intersection to make room.

She failed to see an vehicle driven by Hazel N. Rousman, 76, Portland, and collided with Rousman’s vehicle in the intersection.

Damage was between $2,500 and $5,000.

Geneva police assisted in the accident.

MERCER DEER ACCIDENT

Sherri A. Grover, 29, 407 S. Elm St., Fort Recovery, was eastbound on Ohio 119 in the 1000 Block in Recovery Township of Mercer County at 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, when a deer ran into the roadway. A collision couldn’t be avoided and damage to her vehicle was reported as minor by Mercer County police.

AREA COURTS

Fined recently in Yorktown Town Court was Edward J. Bailey, 67, Portland, FMSCR violation, $134.50.

In Blackford County Court, Rodney A. Hart, Bryant, was fined $124.50 for speeding.[[In-content Ad]]
