Out
A lightning strike along Garfield Street just south of East Votaw Street knocked out electricity for a significant number of customers in and around Portland this morning.
Susan Banta, a spokesperson for American Electric Power, said that approximately 1,200 customers were affected by the outage, which began at 4:09 a.m.
Power was restored to all of the customers at 7:51 a.m.
Customers affected were largely in eastern and northeastern Portland, along with some customers outside the city limits.
The outage caused a two-hour delay this morning for the Jay School Corporation.
Taxing
Jay County Farm Bureau is hosting an informational meeting in regards to property taxes on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Jay County High School auditorium.
The featured speaker will be Indiana Farm Bureau vice president Randy Kron, and the meeting will include possible options on how to reduce property tax bills.
Approved
Jay County Commissioners gave Jay County Sheriff Todd Penrod the OK to purchase two new vehicles for the sheriff’s department.
Penrod reminded commissioners that because of tight budgets in 2002 he had not replaced any vehicles last year, and several of those cars have more than 100,000 miles.
“I’m babying them right now,” he said.
The commissioners agreed to let Penrod act as the purchasing agent for the new units and to seek quotes from area dealerships.
Money for the purchases has already been approved in the 2003 budget.
