Disastrous

Though the Labor Day flooding was nothing compared to what the county endured in July, Jay County is among 21 which have been declared part of a major disaster area, making residents and businesses eligible for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA designated Jay, Blackford, Randolph, Delaware, Grant, Henry, Boone, Clay, Greene, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Owen, Putnam, and Shelby counties as part of the Labor Day flood disaster area.

Assistance can include grants to pay for temporary housing or home repairs. Low-interest loans are available to help cover losses not covered by insurance.

The disaster assistance program starts with a phone call. Those seeking FEMA help should call (800) 621-3362. If you are hearing or speech impaired, phone (800) 462-7585. The toll-free numbers are available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.
