Local Roundup

DUNKIRK — The West Jay boys basketball teams couldn’t have come a whole lot closer, but they still each came home in defeat Wednesday. The eighth grade team rallied from a double-digit deficit only to lose 43-42 to the Monroe Central Golden Bears, and the seventh grade team lost its lead in a 33-29 defeat.

The Eagle eighth graders got thumped in the first quarter, 17-5, but got back in the game. By the end of the third quarter they were down by just three points, but couldn’t complete the comeback as they dropped to 4-7.

Brady Mills and Blake Price each reached double figures in the defeat, scoring 13 and 11 points respectively. Jon Hawn and Ty Fullenkamp added seven points apiece.

West Jay’s seventh grade team dropped to 8-3 after leading 7-4 in the first quarter and by one at the half. Monroe Central tied the game heading into the final quarter and held the Eagles to five points in the final period to take the win.

Josh Beaty paced West Jay with nine points. Taylor Farmer and Drew Locke each scored eight points.
