JCHS/SAHS cross country
HARTFORD CITY - The South Adams High School girls cross country team placed second in the open division at Saturday's Blackford Invitational, the best result of the four area teams.
The Starfires scored 71 points, finishing as the runner-up behind West Noble (57).
The Jay County girls and SAHS boys placed fifth in the open and closed divisions respectively. The Patriots scored 151 points, finishing behind No. 14 Huntington North (28), No. 20 DeKalb (77), No. 10 Westfield (81) and Andrean (137). The Starfires totaled 177 points, winning a tiebreaker against Angola to take fifth place.
Jay County's boys were 15th in the open division with 429 points.
Hannah Moore had the top overall finish for the two schools, placing second for the SAHS girls in 10-minutes, 1 second. Allison Beitler joined her in the top 10 with a time of 20:35 for eighth place.
Taylor Miller and Sawyer Shane finished back-to-back in 15th and 16th at 21:11 and 21:12 respectively, and Carson Shane was 34th with a time of 22:28.
Aly Miller paced the Jay County girls with an eight-place finish in a season-best time of 20:22. Nathan Rupp had the other top-10 effort, leading the SAHS boys in 10th at 17:26.
Aaron Lehman was next for the Starfires in 19th at 17:49, and Sam Heckard placed 35th with a time of 18:20. Gabe Sprunger finished 45th in 18:35, and Andrew Smith was 69th with a time of 19:28.
Leah Wellman trailed Miller in 27th place at 21:40 for the Patriot girls. Kari Hemmelgarn was 37th in 22:04, Katie Simmons finished 39th with a time of 22:09 and Kyle Wellman was 40th in 22:11. Leah Wellman, Hemmelgarn and Simmons all turned in their best times of the season.
Tevan Nichols recorded a time of 19:34 to finish 74th for the Jay County boys. Austin Bentz was 83rd in 20:22 followed by Branden Brinton (85th - 20:36), Spencer Grady (88th - 20:53) and Zach Johnson (99th - 25:12).
