Morgan tosses one-hitter for SA

PONETO - Ashton Morgan powered the South Adams High School softball team to its second conference win of the year Tuesday, 8-0 over the host Southern Wells Raiders.

Morgan, who has a couple of no-hitters this season, limited Southern Wells to just one hit and one walk. She struck out 13 batters as she went the distance.

The senior also finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs. She drove in one run and stole a base.

Kysha Cox went 2-for-3 with a run, and Brianna Nevil drove in two runs.

JC tennis blanked

The Jay County girls tennis team lost by a 5-0 score at home to the Alexandria Monroe Tigers in their regular-season finale.

The closest match of the evening for the Patriots came at No. 2 doubles, where Emily Huntsman and Becky Muhlenkamp lost 6-2, 6-4 to Megan Wright and Lauren Miller. Mariah Clark was the only other JCHS player to win more than a single game, losing 6-1, 6-1 to Mariah Walker at No. 3 singles.

Hannah McAbee fell 6-1, 6-0 to Rebecca Payton at No. 2 singles, and Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman lost 6-0, 6-1 against Bri Hensley and Michelle McFerran at No. 1 doubles.

Kayla Martin dropped the No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0 to Melissa Montgomery.

Jay County lost 9-3 in junior varsity action with wins from Alyssa Rigby, Megan McGraw and Jessica Ooten.

Sprunger leads SAHS

WABASH - Caleb Sprunger had the key hits in each of the last two innings Tuesday as the South Adams baseball team took a 10-6 victory over the host Northfield Norsemen.

With the Starfires trailing 6-4, Andrew Smith doubled to set the stage for Sprunger in the top of the sixth inning. Sprunger tied the game, delivering a two-run home run.

South Adams did more damage in the seventh, sending 10 batters to the plate. It scored four runs, with Sprunger and Taylor LeFever each contributing RBI doubles.

Kyle DeArmond had RBI singles in the second and fourth innings, and Caleb Armenta also drove in a run in the second.

Taylor Smith picked up the win, giving up six runs - four earned - on seven hits and six walks. He struck out four batters in 6 1/3 innings.

Fort athletes honored

FORT RECOVERY - Eight members of the Fort Recovery High School softball and girls track teams were named to the Midwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team this week.

Seniors Joanna Snyder, Kelly Sudhoff and Kinsey Wenning led the honorees for the softball team. Also picking up the award were Shelby Brunswick, Kelsey Faller, Josie Guggenbiller, Andi Sutter and Olivia Thien.

Senior Tina Roessner earned the award for the girls track team along with Alison Tobe, Jessica Link, Alexis Sutter, Amber Hietkamp, Abby Huelskamp, Barbie Link and Holly Brunswick.

Baseball players Brady Kahlig and Ethan Schoenherr, and boys track athlete Shane Stein, were also honored.

The award goes to sophomores, juniors and seniors who earn a varsity letter and have a grade point average of at least 3.5.

Trio leads East

Levi Hummel, Mitchell Bruggeman and Matthew Blackford each won two events to lead the East Elementary boys to victory at Tuesday's Jay County Elementary games. East also won the girls competition.

Hummel was first in the 400-meter dash and jump rope for East. Bruggeman won the medicine ball throw and 1,600 run, and Blackford took the softball throw.

Emilia Minnich of Judge Haynes won the 1,600 run, 800 run and jump rope in the girls competition. Ava Kunkler was first in the 400 dash and long jump to lead East, and Kendra Kane took the 100 dash and 200 dash for Westlawn.

Other boys event winners for East were Michael Vanover (200 dash) and Adrian Stewert (800 run). Bryan Stancliffe of Judge Haynes won the 100 dash.

Also winnning girls events were Pennville's Kyndal Miller (medicine ball toss) and Redkey's Lillian Rogers (softball throw).[[In-content Ad]]
