'Morrie' still available (3/9/04)

Taking Note

Haven’t read “Tuesdays with Morrie” yet?

There’s still time.

Jay County Public Library’s “Jay County Reads!” program is still going strong, but time is running out to order a copy of Mitch Albom’s wonderful book from the library.

The deadline for book orders is 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 13. Book requests will be taken in person or over the phone.

Thanks to support from a Ball Brothers Foundation grant, the book costs just $2 for a trade-sized paperback.

A number of programs and discussion groups are planned for April.

Here’s a small sampling of some of the “Tuesdays with Morrie” related activities being planned:

• Scrapbooking — Tuesday, April 6, at 6:30 p.m.

• Morning book discussion — Thursday, April 8, at 9:30 a.m.

• Journaling — Monday, April 12, at 7 p.m.

• Hospice/home elder care program — Tuesday, April 20, at 7 p.m.

• Teen book discussion — Wednesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m.

• Brown bag lunch book discussion (bring your own sack lunch) — Friday, April 23, at noon.

All of those programs will be held in the library’s Community Room. Registration is required, and space is limited. Refreshments will be served at the discussion groups. Other events will be announced later.

Friday, April 30, is the deadline for the “Tuesdays with Morrie” essay contest for Jay County students ages 15 to 18. Students are encouraged to read the book and write an essay on “Tuesdays, Morrie, Jay County, and Me: How my life in Jay County relates to ‘Tuesdays with Morrie.’”

First-place prize in the essay contest is a computer or a U.S. Savings Bond. Second-place and third-place will also receive U.S. Savings Bonds.

Essay rules and criteria are posted at the library and Jay County High School.
