Muhlenkamp wins scholarship (6/18/04)

Jay Muhlenkamp, a member of Jay County High School’s graduating class of 2004, has another honor to add to his already long list of scholarships and accomplishments.
In a first for Jay County FFA students, Muhlenkamp, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Muhlenkamp, has been awarded a $5,000 National FFA Wal-Mart Stores scholarship.
He plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Purdue University.
Wal-Mart sponsors the scholarship as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. It’s one of 1,656 which will be awarded through the National FFA program this year, with support from 171 corporate sponsors.
The scholarship is for $2,500 the first year and is renewable for the same amount the second year if Muhlenkamp maintains a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
Muhlenkamp was awarded a Lilly Endowment scholarship earlier this spring, but it cannot be applied to room and board. The FFA/Wal-Mart scholarship can be applied to room and board.
Muhlenkamp was winner of the 2004 Chapter Star Farmer Award and was local FFA president his senior year. He has two dairy production agricultural proficiency awards and a state FFA degree. He won the freshman greenhand award and placed third in the state creed speaking contest.
GRADUATES CULVER
Christopher Kleis, son of Dr. and Mrs. Jay Veenendaal, Redkey, has graduated from Culver Academies.
Culver Academies, located on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, are boarding schools offering a nine-month college-prep curriculum for grades nine through 12. The boys’ school was founded in 1894, and the girls’ school was founded in 1971.
Kleis plans to attend Purdue University.
DEPAUW GRADUATE
Lisbeth Mae Prifogle, 8406 North 100 West, Ridgeville, graduated during recent commencement exercises at DePauw University, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in English with an emphasis on writing.
Founded in 1837, DePauw is located in Greencastle. A selective coeducational liberal arts university, it has been nationally recognized for its academic programs.
OUTDOOR WORKSHOP
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Minnetrista have teamed up to offer a workshop for elementary teachers on using children’s books as a “doorway” to nature.
The eight-hour workshop is set for Wednesday, Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Minnetrista in Muncie. Registration for the day begins at 8:15 a.m.
Those attending will be introduced to several books that can be used as a “doorway” They will have a chance to interact with experts in the field, will create a nature journal, and develop outdoor activity extensions from selected children’s books.
Registration in advance is required and must be received by July 28. There is a $20 fee, which includes the cost of lunch. For further information, phone 765-213-3549 or visit the Minnetrista web site at www.mccoak.org.
INSTRUCTORS NEEDED
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross is looking for people interested in learning how to teach CPR and first aid classes.
A four-day instructor training course will be offered beginning next week. Participants must attend all four sessions to become a certified instructor.
The sessions, which will be held at the Hoosier Heartland Chapter offices in Muncie, run from 6 to 10 p.m.
The sessions are set for Tuesday, June 22, Wednesday, June 23, Tuesday, June 29, and Wednesday, June 30.
The cost of the course is $100, which covers all materials and certification.

The Jay County Historical Museum will hold another open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., coinciding with Saturday night’s Portland High School alumni gatherings.
Local collector Cheryl Myers will have items from her collection of school memorabilia on display. Items from the eight former high schools in Jay County — PHS, Dunkirk, Redkey, Pennville, Bryant, Poling, Madison, and Gray — will be featured. Some of the composite photographs which used to hang in the halls of Portland High School will be on display.
Admission to the museum, which is located at 903 E. Main St., Portland, is always free, though donations are welcomed.
ISTEP PREP
Ivy Tech State College is offering an ISTEP math prep course this summer for the first time.
It’s designed to help high school students prepare for the ISTEP exams. It’s also useful for any student needed a review of high school algebra, so students planning to take college placement tests this fall might also be interested.
