MUNCIE - Jay County High School's girls tennis team won more than two games in just one match Tuesday in a 5-0 loss to the Muncie Central Bearcats.
Emily Huntsman and Becky Muhlenkamp played the closest match for the Patriots. After dropping the first set, they had a 5-4 lead in the second only to lose in a tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Kayla Martin fell 6-2, 6-0 to Michelle Schmaltz at No. 1 singles, and Hannah McAbee took a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Abbie Allardt at No. 2 singles.
In the No. 1 doubles match Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman lost 6-0, 6-1, and in the No. 3 singles match Mariah Clark retired because of an illness trailing 3-2 in the opening set.
JCHS also lost the junior varsity match, 12-0. Alicia Degler and Chelsea Kimmel forced a tiebreaker at No. 4 doubles before falling 8-7 (7-2), and Alyssa Rigby lost 8-6 at No. 2 singles.
FR one-hit again
ST. HENRY, Ohio - The Fort Recovery softball team managed just a single hit for the second straight night, losing 1-0 to the St. Henry Redskins.
Tuesday's game was scoreless until St. Henry scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Indians (6-9, 1-5 Midwest Athletic Conference) had only one hit Monday in a 5-0 loss to Marion Local.
Andi Sutter took the loss, giving up the single run on seven hits and two walks. She struck out three batters in 6 2/3 innings.
Josie Guggenbiller had the Tribe's lone hit.
Stars fall to Garrett
BERNE - A run in the final inning proved too little too late for the South Adams baseball team in a 4-1 loss Tuesday to the visiting Garrett Railroaders.
Garrett led just 1-0 before scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning.
Caleb Sprunger walked in the bottom of the seventh for the Starfires and advanced to second base on a walk. A ground ball moved him to third, and he scored the only South Adams run on a wild pitch.
Caleb Armenta had a double for the Starfires' lone extra-base hit.
Taylor Smith took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out four batters.

HUNTINGTON - Jay County's junior varsity softball team finished with just one hit Tuesday in an 11-0, five-inning loss to the Huntington North Vikings.
Leanna Vore took the loss, but all eight runs against her in three innings were unearned. She gave up one hit and seven walks while striking out three.
