Muncie Central stops Pats' four-game winning streak (10/01/04)

PORTLAND — The Muncie Central Bearcats put an end to Jay County’s girls soccer team’s four-game winning streak Thursday, dropping the Patriots 2-0.

Central scored just a few minutes into the game for a 1-0 advantage which stayed on the board for the next 72 minutes. The Bearcats scored again with fewer than five minutes remaining in the game for the final margin.

Jay County (7-5-1) took nine shots on goal in the defeat, six of which came from senior Jamie Bruggeman. Jessica Heitkamp, Krista Ross and Abby Schmiesing added one shot apiece.

Goalie Abby Loy saved 10 of the 12 shots which came her way.

The Patriots will complete the regular season at Yorktown Thursday at 5 p.m.

JC freshmen still perfect

BLUFFTON — Simply being perfect wasn’t enough for the Jay County freshman football team. Now it is shutting the opposition out.

The Patriots, who are now 5-0, scored their second straight shutout Thursday by blanking the Bluffton Tigers 34-0.

Their last victory came by a 27-0 score over Anderson Highland.

Austin May got the scoring started for Jay County Thursday with a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, the first of four first-half touchdowns by the Patriots. Bluffton was forced to punt on its next drive, and Justin Mann quickly made the Tigers pay as he followed a big block from Tom McCord and returned the kick 80 yards for a touchdown.

Kyle Cook added a 31-yard touchdown run after Bluffton turned the ball over on downs, and Aaron Daniels later connected with Michael Jobe for a 75-yard touchdown pass.

May had a pair of first-half extra-point kicks, and Daniels also passed to Jobe for a two-point conversion as they Patriots led 28-0 at the intermission.

Mann took over at quarterback in the second half, hitting Heath Rigby with a 30-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Jobe and Daniels led the defensive effort for Jay County with 10 and eight tackles respectively. Clint Muhlenkamp and Daniels each added a fumble recovery.

EJ gridders roll

PORTLAND — East Jay’s eighth grade football team continued its perfect season Thursday, matching the freshman team’s shutout effort with a 41-0 blanking of Muncie Northside.

Billy Wellman was in on four of the touchdown plays for the Chiefs (6-0), including each of the first two.

First he hit Dalton McGill with a 10-yard touchdown pass and ran in for the two-point conversion. Then he picked up a fumble and ran it 60 yards for a touchdown.

Adam Garringer took care of each of the next two scores, running in for a 5-yard touchdown and catching a 20-yard scoring strike from Wellman. Wellman passed to McGill for two points after Garringer’s scoring run.

Brandon Reynard added a 3-yard touchdown run, and Wellman scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. Trey Dunn followed Wellman’s run with an extra-point kick.

Vincente Vasquez added an interception in the victory.

Eagle spikers split

WINCHESTER — West Jay’s seventh grade volleyball team came up with a big win Thursday, handing Winchester Driver its first home loss of the season 25-20, 25-17. The eighth grade team lost to Driver 25-10, 25-22.

Amber McCowan paced the seventh grade team with 10 points. Nine of those came as she led the game-two victory for the Eagles (6-3).

Brittany Muhlenkamp and Brittany Watson scored all of their points in the first game, finishing with seven and six respectively, and Hayley Knight had all of her five points in game two.

Kelci Reed scored eight points to lead the eighth grade team. Chelsea Grady had seven, Lindsey Current scored six and Terra Kelly added five.[[In-content Ad]]
