Murphy wins geography bee (1/22/04)
Taking Note
The winner and runner-up for the Geography Bee at East Jay Middle School were recently named.
First place winner was Mason Murphy, the son of Mitch and Anna Murphy of Bryant. He is a seventh grade student.
Lee Haggenjos, son of Mark and Donna Haggenjos, Portland, was the runner up. He is an eighth grader.
Mason has taken a test, that has been sent to Washington, D.C., to see if he will qualify for the state meet in Indianapolis.
OPEN MIC
An open mic night will be held Friday, Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Historic Union City Indiana Depot, Union City.
The event is intended for mucisians who would like to share a favorite old classic or a newly created piece.
Bands will not be allowed to perform and only one or two microphones will be available, limiting the number of performers on stage. Each set will be limited to 10 minutes.
Admission is $2 per adult or $1 per child. The Depot is located at 115 N. Howard St., behind Pak-A-Sak.

DEAN’S LIST
Aaron Reidenbach, Decatur, was named to the fall semester dean’s list at Taylor University Fort Wayne Campus, Fort Wayne. He is the grandson of Max Claycomb, Redkey, and June Elliott, Portland.
CONDUCTOR CLASSES
The Whitewater Valley Railroad at Connersville is offering operating classes for brakeman, conductor, fireman, engineer, agent and operator beginning Saturday, Feb. 7 and continuing until Saturday, March 27.
The classes begin at 9 a.m. each Saturday and include classroom instruction and hands-on training in train operations, signaling and switching, and an introduction to diesel and steam locomotive operation.
The classes are open to the public. To cover the cost of classroom materials, a $15 fee will be charged.

Minnetrista Cultural Center of Muncie, will host keynote speaker Dr. James H. Madison during History Spectrum on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8:30 a.m. The last session of the day is at 3 p.m.
Madison will present, “The Three R’s”, a program about research in race relations and regional history with particular attention to Indiana. Miller is a history professor at Indiana University.
History Spectrum is an annual professional development workshop day for history educators. The workshop offers state certified continuing renewal credits, as well as ideas for the classroom.
The workshops will feature hour-long sessions led by educators and various history experts.
Cost for the spectrum is $30 per person or $20 for students. Due to limited space, reservations are required. Call (765) 213-3549 for reservations and information.[[In-content Ad]]
