Museum open house set (3/10/04)

Taking Note

The Jay County Historical Museum, 903 E. Main St. is having an open house on Sunday, March 14, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Featured at the event will be a 1906 letter written by Civil War Medal of Honor winner Louis J. Bruner. There will also be a display about Jay County pioneer aviator Albert Rupel, with aviation enthusiast Mike Landers on hand to discuss the Rupel story.

Admission is free.

COLLECTORS SALE

The New Idea Manual and Collector Sale will be in Coldwater, Ohio, on Sunday, March 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event will be at the former New Idea building on Rt. 118 and Sycamore and is sponsored by the Mercer County Historical Society, Inc. Call (419) 586-6065 for more information.

TRACTOR AND ENGINE FANS

The tenth annual Winter Tractor and Engine Show will be held Friday, March 19, through Sunday, March 21, in Auburn at the Kruse International Auction Park, I-69 and County Road 11A, exit 126.

There will be an antique gas engine auction on Saturday at noon and the Seventh Annual Farm Toy Auction will be Sunday at 10 a.m. There will also be a craft show and swap meet. Breakfast will be available from 7 to 10 a.m. each day and food concessions will be available.

REDKEY RECEIVES GRANT

The Star Press Children’s Charities recently awarded grants to local organizations and the Redkey Junior League received a $1,000 to reconfigure their T-ball diamond to a baseball diamond.

The diamond will be a practice field for minor and major league teams and also for fast-pitch softball.



SERVICE PROJECT

Lindsey Jenney, Portland, will be traveling to Caretta, W. Va., to participate in community service projects.

Through Leadership and Service Learning (LSL) at Ball State University, students will assist the community in McDowell County through building, roofing, painting and cleaning as well as an enrichment program at the area high school.

This is LSL’s first official Alternative Spring Break (ASB) trip since 1995.

Jenney is a freshman majoring in radiography. She is the daughter of James and Kristi Jenney, Portland.

PIANO SOLOS

Three Jay County students participated in the piano solo division of the Indiana State School Music Association at Muncie South Side High School.

Katie Alberson, a senior, received a silver medal for her performance of three numbers from Mendelssohn’s Song without words, Confidence, Boat Song #1 and Consolation.

Amanda Alberson, a freshman, received a gold medal for Andantino by Khatchaturian.

Kyle Prifogle, a junior, received a gold medal for performing Butterfly Etude by Chopin.

He advanced to the state level at Butler University, where he also won a gold medal.

The students are members of the Jay County Marching Patriots and are piano students of Wanda Hall, Portland.

ART AND POETRY NIGHT

On Friday, March 26, the Union City Art Depot will hold its 50th Anniversary Art Show at 5 p.m. and open-mic poetry night at 7p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce community room, 105 North Columbia Street. The community room adjoins the Branham Hotel.

The art show will feature oil paintings, watercolors, pastels, photographs, and eclectic art.

There will be a poets’ reception with hors d’ oeuvres and music, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. All area poets are invited to attend.

The events are sponsored by the Art Associationof Randolph County and Mississinawa Valley Local School and are free to the public.

There will be an Information Session regarding the Minnetrista Farmers Market on Saturday, April 10, at 9 a.m. in the Cantina at the Minnetrista Cultural Center for all intererested vendors.
