Museum to hold open house (11/21/06)

The Jay County Historical Museum will host its first Christmas open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
There will be 20 decorated trees on display and other period decorations.
Also featured will be a display of furniture from the 1925 Ketring's Furniture Store Christmas advertisement prepared by Portland residents Mary and Judy Hedges and Mike and Pat Szakaly.
The museum is located at 903 E. Main Street in Portland. Admission is free.
Christmas at Key Palace
The Redkey Optimist Club will host a free Christmas program on Sunday, Dec. 10, at 2 p.m. at the Key Palace Theatre in Redkey. Featured will be Jay County High School Jazz Band and Jay County High School choirs.
Santa will also be visiting and refreshments will be served.
Essays winners named
U.S. Senator Dick Lugar recently announced the county winners of the 2006-07 Dick Lugar Essay Contest. The theme "Feeding Our Bodies, Fueling The Future," was intended for students to consider the role farmers play in fueling both our bodies and the future.
Winning from Jay County were Steve Alig and Elaine Hemmelgarn, both students at East Jay Middle School.
Girl Scouts to merge
The Girl Scouts of Wapehani Council, Inc., Daleville, recently voted to merge with four other Indiana Councils. The five councils merging are Girl Scouts of Hoosier Capital, Sycamore, Treaty Line and Covered Bridge, and will be known as the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana, Inc. The merger will begin Jan. 1.
The move will provide increased program opportunities, better program delivery and enhanced systems, increase capacity and strengthen local programming which helps fulfill the mission of Girl Scouts.
