Myers' three-set win lifts Starfires

BERNE — When the Starfires needed him, Brayden Myers came through.
Myers’ three-set win Tuesday secured the victory for the South Adams High School boys tennis team as it topped the visiting Blackford Bruins 3-2.
Myers fought back to give the Starfires the win after falling in the second set. He knocked off Trevor Smith 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Dylan Pierce and Blake Baumer rolled over Travis Scriba and Jordon Elliott 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Jared Rife defeated Heaston Wilson 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.
Dexter Miller went three sets in his No. 2 singles match, but came up short 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 against Bailey Landis. Landon Lehman and Cole Myers lost the No. 1 doubles match 6-0, 6-2 to Mitchell Lanning and Chase Twibell.

Golfers top Wayne Trace
GENEVA — South Adams ran its record to 6-3 Tuesday with a 210-220 win on its home course over the Wayne Trace Raiders.
Abbie Fisher played the first four holes at Golf Club of the Limberlost at 2-over-par and finished with two pars and five bogeys on the way to a 46. Kelli Lehman also shot 46 for the Starfires with pars on the first and ninth holes.
Emily Linder of Wayne Trace turned in the lone birdie of the day as she led her team with a 46.
Sam Schwartz of South Adams had two bogeys for a 55, and Ellerie Baer rounded out the team score with a 63. Maddie Graber shot 67.

Parkway defeats volleyball
ROCKFORD, Ohio — SAHS struggled to get going against the host Parkway Panthers Tuesday in a 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 defeat.
Cindy In’t Groen finished with four kills and four digs to lead the Starifres (1-9). Cady Farlow had seven assists, and Alyssa Bluhm had five kills.

Hannah Mitchell paced the defense with five digs, and Lauren Smith followed with four.
The South Adams junior varsity team lost to Parkway in two games. Kylie Grabau had five digs.

Soccer teams fall
The Starfire boys were unable to keep the momentum after picking up their first win Saturday as they fell 3-0 Tuesday to the visiting Garrett Railroaders. The SAHS girls suffered a 7-0 road loss to the Leo Lions.
Garrett took control of the boys game in the first half as Dylan Sweet scored the opening goal on an assist from Kaleb Hoover. Karsten Cooper made it 2-0 at the intermission when he scored off of a Hoover assist.
Hoover added a third assist in the second half when Reiley Pugh score for the three-goal final margin.
Alaina Johnston finished with 30 saves in the loss for the Starfire girls.

Groh, Stuber lead
PONETO — Joe Stuber scored three times Tuesday to lead the South Adams Middle School seventh grade football team to a 30-6 victory over the host Southern Wells Raiders. J.D. Groh had two TDs in the eighth graders’ 26-6 win.
Stuber scored on runs of 12, 15 and 20 yards and picked up 161 rushing yards on just nine carries. He also tossed a 37-yard scoring pass to Terry Dawn and finished with 13 tackles.
Groh (95 yards) scored second-half touchdowns on a 49-yard run and a 25-yard reception from Marc Teeter. Josh Lahr and Blade Zeitvogel (114 yards) each added TD runs, and Groh notched 11 tackles.
