NCGLNAC to have hands-on history class
Taking Note
National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc. will have a hands-on history class on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Women's Building at Jay County Fairgrounds in Portland.
Boni Bent-Nelson of South Bend will teach children ages six and older, with an adult, about the fur trade and its impact on people of the Great Lakes region. Participants will make crafts and have a trading session and may bring items to trade (in a bag).
The cost is $10 and includes instruction and all materials. You may bring a sack lunch. To register by Oct. 20, contact Kay Neumayr at (765) 426-3022 or [email protected].
Reunion change
The South Adams High School class of 1999 will have its 10-year reunion on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Elizabeth Adams Fruechte's family farm at 8678 South 550 East in Berne. It was originally to be held at the Grey Goose Golf Club in Decatur.
The reunion will begin at 6 p.m. Dress for the weather and bring a lawn chair.
The cost is $15. R.S.V.P. with name of graduate and name of one guest to Lyndsi (Habegger) Moser at (317) 823-0413 and send checks payable to "South Adams Class of 1999" to Elizabeth (Adams) Fruechte, 1951 West 500 North, Decatur, IN 46733. Registration deadline is Oct. 19.
CTS get-together
Former employees of CTS in Berne are invited to a get-together at Lehman Park Pavilion in Berne on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. Bring a covered dish, tableware and a beverage. Come for the carry-in or stop by and visit.
To compete
Dan Brackman, a former Fort Recovery FFA member, is a finalist for the National FFA proficiency award in diversified livestock. He is one of four people chosen from across the nation to compete for the award at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis on Oct. 21 to 24.
The award recognizes outstanding student achievement in agri-business through students establishing a business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience. Brackman worked more than 6,600 hours at Meiring Poultry and Fish Farm and his family's hog operation near Fort Recovery for four years.
He is a sophomore at Wilmington College pursuing a bachelor's degree in agriculture with a concentration in animal science. He is the son of Doris and Keith Good, Fort Recovery.
Annual meeting
The Jay County Trail Riders Association held its annual meeting in September with a campout at the Trail Riders Center in rural Redkey.
Elected to the board of directors were Richard Jones, Lee Newman and Tracy Campbell. Other board members are Rob Frazee, Earl McCowan, Matt Paxson and Paula Davidson.
Officers who were re-elected for 2010 were Tom Jacobs, president; Ray Wheat, vice-president; Richard Jones, secretary/treasurer.
The cost of membership to Jay County Trail Riders Association is $25. For more information, contact any of the board members.
Livestock expo
Portland residents Trevor Homan, Travis Homan and Kendra Homan will show junior market sheep and lambs at the 36th annual North American International Livestock Exposition to be held Nov. 7 to 20 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.

Lee Yoder, Geneva, was named to the dean's list at Ball State University for the summer of 2009.[[In-content Ad]]
