New arts portal set (10/7/03)
Taking Note
Arts Place Inc. has partnered with Envisage, a Bloomington, Ind.-based high technology firm, to promote the arts in Indiana.
The arts-related Internet portal will be launched Thursday, Oct. 23 and will provide a wide array of arts and event information. The primary goal is to assist artists and arts organizations across the state in showcasing themselves, their work and services and events. The project required the collaboration of Indiana’s 12 Regional Arts Partners, the Indiana Arts Commission and Traditional Arts Indiana.
“Indiana’s rich cultural and artistic resources are oftentimes under-appreciated largely due to a lack of available information,” Arts Place executive director Eric Rogers said. “Arts-related funding remains tight, and our goal is to provide critical marketing assistance to artists by launching an information portal for the public that will showcase individual artists and events.”
The new IndianaArts.org web portal will feature technologies developed by Envisage that are designed to connect artists, arts-related organizations and the public to information of interest.
The portal will consist of a series of interlocking artist, organization, event and classifieds databases. The public will be able to search for artists, organizations and events of interest. Artists will be able to showcase their work in digital portfolios, access job opportunities and add events to the calendar at no cost. Visitors will be able to set up personalized alerts that will e-mail targeted information of interest. Artists also will be able to subscribe to arts-related job postings, competition notices, grant information and calls for entry.
“Envisage has been tremendous to work with,” Rogers said. “We would not have been able to achieve our goals without them. They not only understand how to apply technology to cultural tourism but in addition, share a fundamental belief in what we are doing. As a result, Envisage has supported us with both technical expertise and marketing savvy and has donated a significant portion of the funds necessary to build the portal.”
This project has been in the works for six years, Rogers added.
In related news, Rogers and Arts Place, Inc., will be receiving an Indiana Governor’s Arts Award on Thursday, Oct. 23 at the annual Indiana Community Arts Conference in Indianapolis.
The award is given to honor master artists and leading art patrons. Recipients will be recognized by Governor Joseph E. Kernan.
