New construction tops $5.6 million

The Jay/Portland Building and Planning Department issued a permit during October to Katelynn Place, a $4.6 million apartment complex to be built in northern Portland.

The 56-unit housing complex will be located on West Lafayette Street and has an estimated construction cost of $4,613,580.

The department issued 27 permits totaling an estimated $5,627,180 in construction costs.

Governor honor

Gov. Mitch Daniels honored Jay County business Display Craft with a Half Century Award for its longevity and community impact.

Display Craft, Portland, became one of more than 1,300 companies in the state to be honored with the award during the past 19 years.

The company has been making retail signs and products since 1958 and produces products for interior and exterior displays for companies around the Midwest.

'Copter canceled

Life Air announced it will end its agreement to provide air ambulance service to Ball Memorial Hospital after six months.

The helicopter transport company, which stationed a chopper at the hospital, will terminate service to BMH on Nov. 14. Life Air told BMH officials that flight volume was not enough to maintain service at the hospital.

LifeLine Critical Care Transport will take over service effective Nov. 15, but those helicopters will have to be called in from outside the Muncie area.

Profits up

Comcast Corp. reported a 22 percent profit increase in the third quarter.

Investors were following how a deal to purchase a 51 percent stake in NBC Universal would turn out. Comcast is negotiating a deal with General Electric Co., which owns 80 percent of NBC.

Pie donations

Richards Restaurant is donating portions of all pumpkin pie sales through Nov. 26.

The restaurant will donate 50 cents of each slice of pumpkin pie and $1 for each whole pie to 16 non-profit organizations around the area.

Networking breakfast

The next Jay County Chamber of Commerce networking breakfast is Wednesday.

Community developer Ami Huffman will present "2010 Census Means $$ for Jay County." Reservations must be made before Nov. 9 and can be e-mailed to [email protected]. Cost is $4.

Recycling program

Saint-Gobain Containers recently released an animated feature to teach elementary school students the importance of recycling.

The program includes two short animated films, activity books, mazes and puzzles and coloring sheets to reinforce the importance of recycling glass products.

Saint-Gobain, Dunkirk, produces millions of glass bottles for Anheuser-Busch every year.

CVS loss

CVS Caremark announced multi-billion dollar contract losses, losing $4.8 billion in contracts for 2010.

Profits may drop up to 12 percent next year and shares plunged 20 percent on the day of the announcement. CVS officials had previously anticipated a profit growth of 13 to 15 percent in 2010, but have since announced that won't happen.[[In-content Ad]]
