New reading program set
Taking Note
Jay County Public Library will have a new reading program that will run in conjunction with the Olympic Winter Games.
"Be a Gold Medal Reader" will begin Feb. 12 and continue through Feb. 28 for children in preschool through fifth grade. They will be asked to read or be read to for 20 minutes a day and to move or excercise 20 minutes a day.
Children who successfully complete the program will receive a gold medal. Read and Move calendars are available at the library at 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.
Oratorical winners
Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest winners at General Shanks Elementary were Abby Barcus, the daughter of Steve and Brenda Barcus, and Ian Reynolds, the son of Eric Reynolds and Pam Reynolds.
The alternates are Blaize Miller, the daughter of Phillip and Terri Miller, and Collin Kriegbaum, the son of Robert and Brooke Kriegbaum.
Winners at Redkey Elementary were Luke Swartz and Lillian Rogers and the alternates were Jacob Geesaman and Abigail Lowe.
Winners at Jay Christian Academy were Juliana Blount, the fifth grade daughter of Lorenn Upp and Ryan Blount, both of Portland, and Elijah Corwin, the third grade son of Mitchell and Sabrina Corwin, Portland.
The alternates were Rebekah Corwin, the fifth grade daughter of Mitchell and Sabrina Corwin, Portland, and Gabriel Bullard, the fifth grade son of Jackie Lavy, Portland, and Jason Bullard, Elk Ridge, Utah.
The winners will compete in the county contest on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Pennville Elementary.
Witt Light
Stephanie Rines, a 2008 graduate of Wittenberg University is featured as the Witt Light student this month on the Wittenberg website.
Rines graduated from Jay County High School in 2004 and earned a degree in English from Wittenberg.
Her first year out of college she worked with VISTA in Asheville, N.C., where she did grant writing, fundraising, event planning and marketing for Asheville GreenWorks.
She now works for VISTA at Wittenberg where she coordinates service events and poverty awareness programs.

Bee winners
The winner of the Geography Bee at West Jay Middle School was Aaron Neal, the son of Brad and April Neal; the first runner-up was Jacob Grant, the son of Danny Grant and Jennifer Grant; and the second runner-up was Brody Barcus, the son of Kevin and Wanda Barcus.
Theme chosen
The Jay County Historical Society has chosen the theme for the eighth annual Heritage Festival to be held Saturday, Oct. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 3.
"When Grandpa Farmed - History of Farming in Jay County" will be the theme in honor of the first settlers who came to Jay County in the 1820's and began clearing the land and planting crops.
Jane Spencer is writing a book on farming to be released during the festival. Anyone with photographs of family members engaged in any aspect of farming, may bring them to the museum at 903 E. Main St. in Portland on Thursdays or Fridays for Spencer to see.
Dean's list
Sharon Dirksen, a sophomore, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio.
She is the daughter of Lester and Velma Dirksen, Portland.
