FORT RECOVERY — After spending the last two months reviewing applications and interviewing candidates the Fort Recovery School Board has made a unanimous decision on its new superintendent.

David Riel, who retired after 24 years as an elementary school principal at New Richmond Exempted Village Schools, had his contract approved by a 5-0 vote in a special session board meeting Wednesday evening. Riel, a resident of Moscow, Ohio, was in Fort Recovery last week for a second interview after being named one of three finalists for the position.

He will replace current Fort Recovery Supt. Pat Niekamp on Jan. 1. Niekamp is leaving the district to accept a position as the county superintendent for the Auglaize County Educational Service Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio.

“After a thorough process ... the board hired the best person for the job,” board president Dan Kahlig said. “Based on everything we have learned, Mr. Riel is an outstanding educator with a vision for the future, a focus on student achievement and an uncompromising goal to make out district the best in the state.”

The school board was assisted in its search by the Ohio School Boards Association, and specifically by Kathy LaSota, who is the deputy director of search services and board development.

“I applaud the board of education, the staff and community for working steadily with me throughout the past three months,” LaSota said. “The board stayed true to a process that placed all interested parties on a level playing field ... (the board) included community and staff in the decision and allowed the professional who best fit their profile to emerge as the successful candidate.”

Riel received his master’s degree from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has over 30 years of experience as both a teacher and a school administrator. His base salary was approved at $80,430.

The board originally accepted over 18 applications for the position and selected seven candidates for the first round of interviews in late October. Of those seven, three finalists were brought back last week for a second interview, a tour of the school and a “meet and greet” reception.

“There were a number of candidates with excellent credentials, but in the end analysis, we felt his proven ability throughout his career was the deciding factor,” Kahlig said. “We are convinced we made an excellent choice.”

His contract is effective from Jan. 1, 2003 until July 31, 2006.[[In-content Ad]]
