Six area residents recently were selected as the 2004 recipients of the new John Jay Center for Learning Scholarships.
These $500 scholarships were established this year by The Portland Foundation Board of Directors to aid in the pursuit of higher education in Jay County.
Receiving these scholarships were Laura DuJardin of Portland, who is studying radiology; C. Dru Mercer of Bryant, who is studying elementary education; Portland residents Jennifer Miller and Shannon Newton, who are nursing students; Rex Pinkerton of Portland, who is studying education administration; and Pennville resident Julie Swoveland, a business administration student.
Three other area residents also received new awards through two scholarship funds recently.
Natasha Garringer and William “Brad” Stulz, both of Portland, are the 2004 recipients of the Jerry R. Pierce Memorial Scholarships. Garringer is the daughter of Steven and Marylyn Garringer of Portland, and she will attend Vincennes University to study law enforcement. Stulz is the son of Billie Girton of Portland, and he is a junior at Ball State University studying sociology and public history.
They each received a $2,500 scholarship.
This scholarship was established in December 2002 in memory of Pierce by his wife Kay. It was designed to benefit employees or descendants of employees of W&M Manufacturing Inc., Pier-Mac Plastics Inc. or Accelerated Curing Inc., all of Portland.
Pennville resident Lindsay Ross was awarded the Marseal T. Deweerd, Edith T. Horn and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship. Ross is the daughter of Sharon Ross of Pennville, and she is studying dental hygiene at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
As stipulated in Deweerd’s will, the scholarship was established in August 2001 in honor of Deweerd, Horn and Brady. It is renewable for up to our semesters at $200 per semester.
This competitive scholarship is open to applicants in their junior and senior years of college. It is scored upon academics, financial need, activities, community involvement and response to an essay question. In addition, preference is given to a student from the Pennville area, per the direction of the donor.[[In-content Ad]]
