No. 4 Patriots dropped by Bruins (05/15/03)

One game short of matching its eight-game winning streak to open the season, the Class 3A No. 4 Jay County baseball team faltered. The Patriots managed just one hit Wednesday in a 4-1 loss to the Blackford Bruins.

Jay County (15-2) got its only hit when Cameron Hummel led off the third inning with a single. He eventually scored his team’s lone run on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Blackford tied the game in the bottom of the frame with one run, and scored three times in the fifth for the final margin.

Mike Smith took the loss for the Patriots, allowing four runs — one earned — on five hits. He struck out four and walked one in six innings.

Jay County will try to get back on track when it returns to Olympic Athletic Conference play today at home against Anderson Highland at 4:30 p.m.

Stars fall to Knights

The South Adams baseball team put up a fight, but couldn’t handle the Norwell Knights Wednesday in an 8-5 defeat.

The Starfires trailed 6-0 after three innings, but rallied with a run in the fourth and four in the sixth to close the gap. But, they couldn’t score any runs after that, and Norwell added two more for the final margin.

Jeremiah Kaeser suffered the loss, allowing six runs — three earned — in 21/3 innings. Aaron Givens allowed two runs in 42/3 innings of relief.

Kyle Neuenschwander led the South Adams offense with a 2-for-4 effort. He scored one run and had a stolen base.

Kaeser singles and scored twice, and Doug Roop had an RBI.

The Starfires will play at Woodlan Saturday at 11 a.m.

Junior League

Pak-A-Sak blanked Union Bank in their Portland Junior League Willie Mays League game Wednesday. PG-14 outlasted Optimist for a 15-10 win Tuesday.

Pak-A-Sak was led by Trenton Detro, who notched two hits. He also took the mound, tossing a no-hitter.

Kyle Davidson and Landry Inman each had a pair of hits for PG-14. Shawn Homan pitched for the victory.

Optimist got a pair of hits each from Brandon Kauffman and Dillon Ainsworth.

Basketball camp

The Jay County High School boys basketball camps will be held June 9-13 at JCHS.

There will be three separate sessions, one for third and fourth grades (10 to 11 a.m.), one for fifth and sixth graders (11 a.m. to noon) and one for seventh and eighth graders (noon to 1 p.m.).

The camps will be conducted by Jay County coach Craig Teagle and his staff and players.

The cost of each camp is $25, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are available at any of the schools in Jay County.

Fishing contest

The Normal City Fly Fishing Derby will be Saturday, June 21 on the White River in Muncie Indiana.

Derby activities will begin and end at the Minnetrista Cultural Center. It is scheduled to run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The derby will be limited to 50 participants, and the entry fee is $35.

Soccer schedule

The schedule for soccer open gyms at the Jay County Boys/Girls Club Community Center has been released.

Open gyms for sixth through eighth graders will be Friday, May 16, Thursday, May 29, Tuesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. They will be held for fourth through sixth graders Monday, June 2 and Wednesday June 4 from 6 to 8 p.m.

There is no cost to attend the open gyms.
