No. 5 Flyers defeat Fort

MARIA STEIN, Ohio — The fifth-ranked team in the state kept the Indians from a perfect week.
Fort Recovery High School’s volleyball team, which won back-to-back matches Monday and Tuesday over Ansonia and St. John’s, fell 25-18, 25-16, 25-17 Thursday to the Division IV No. 5 host Marion Local Flyers.
Kelsey Fiely had five digs, three kills and three blocks for the Indians, who fell to 6-16 overall and 2-7 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Kayla Kahlig had six service points and four assists against the Flyers (18-4, 8-1 MAC), and Kylie Kahlig notched five kills and six blocks.
Abby Backs came up with 16 digs, and Amy Link scored eight service points.
Sierra Pugh finished with four service points, three assists and three digs as the FRHS junior varsity squad (12-6) fell 25-22, 25-12 to the Flyers. The freshman team (7-1) lost 25-9, 25-11 with Rachel Pugh contributing five assists and three points.

EJ gridders win
HARTFORD CITY — Matt Blackford ran for a pair of touchdowns against host Blackford to lead the East Jay Middle School eighth grade football team to a 20-8 victory. Ivan Hemmelgarn tossed for one score and ran for another in the seventh grade squad’s 26-0 win.
Blackford scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter and a 60-yarder in the second for the Chief eighth graders (5-2). Levi Hummel added a 2-yard scoring run that was set up by a 70-yard jaunt by Michael Vanover, and Mitchell Bruggeman had an interception.
Hemmelgarn tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jay Houck in the opening quarter for the EJMS seventh graders (4-2-1) and added a 15-yard scramble for a TD in the third quarter. Other TDs came from Jason Schlosser and Brandt Pearson, and Caleb Kunkle had an interception.

Dues, Wenning lead
FORT RECOVERY — Wes Wenning and Cole Dues each scored a pair of touchdowns Thursday as the Fort Recovery eighth grade football team topped the St. John’s Blue Jays and the seventh graders scored a 30-0 victory.

Wenning ran for TDs of 24 and 52 yards as the Indian eighth graders improved to 4-2-2. Darien Sheffer tossed a 17-yard scoring pass to Jackson Hobbs.
Cole Dues scampered to the end zone for 51- and 52-yard TD runs as the seventh graders finished at 6-2. Tom Koester had a 45-yard scoring run, and Caleb Martin ran for a 43-yard TD.

Spiker seasons end
MINSTER and COLDWATER, Ohio — The seasons came to an end Thursday for the Fort Recovery Middle School volleyball teams.
The eighth graders fell 17-25, 25-20, 26-24 to St. John’s in the opening round of the Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament at Minster. The seventh graders lost in the MAC tournament at Coldwater by a 25-16, 25-23 score to St. Henry.
Kirsten Jutte finished with 16 service points and six assists in the loss for the eighth grade Indians (6-11). Morgan Lennartz had nine kills and three blocks.
Devin Post totaled eight kills and two blocks for the Tribe seventh grade squad (6-11). Audra Metzger added five service points and three assists.

Three record aces
Jerry Abbott knocked in another hole-in-one while Mitchell Rigby and Whitney Gray each recorded their first during the fall season at Portland Golf Club.
Abbott’s ace came with an 8-iron on the 168-yard, par-3 15th hole at PGC. Steve Laux and Jerry Alexander witnessed the shot, which was Abbott’s fifth career hole-in-one.
Rigby also recorded his ace on the 15th hole as he used a 7-iron. Evan Mathias and Dylan Friddle witnessed the shot.
Gray put in her first hole-in-one on the 15th hole during a practice round in September.[[In-content Ad]]
