No. 5 Jets stomp Jay Co. (09/25/03)

The Jay County volleyball team lost to its fifth ranked opponent this season Wednesday. Another awaits today.

The Patriots fell to the Class 2A No. 5 Adams Central Jets 21-7, 21-7, 21-13 to drop to 8-13 on the season. They play at Class A No. 8 Wes-Del today at 6 p.m.

Sarah Ainsworth played some solid defense for Jay County, finishing with a team-high 13 digs. She also had three points and seven assists.

Sara Hough led the team with four kills, and Ashley Overla and Becki Beeler each had three. Overla scored four points, Beeler had three, and Leah Gasparovic came up with nine digs.

Jay County had a better showing in the junior varsity match, but still lost a 21-14, 12-21, 21-14 decision.

Julie Sours finished with five points — four on aces — nine digs and three kills for the Patriots (7-5). Jamie Walker had 12 digs and three kills, and Miranda Tingley scored five points and added 15 assists.

Theresa Reinhart finished with 11 points, and Erica McIntire had five kills.

The Jay County freshmen (3-2) lost to the Jets 21-6, 21-7.

Mary Spencer had four kills, and Erica Clark put up three assists. Carrisa Wilkens had a kill and three points, and Lacey VanSkyock and Jessica Muhlenkamp each scored one point.

WJ runners 2nd

West Jay’s cross country teams ran to a pair of second-place finishes in a four-team field at Cowan Wednesday.

The girls team finished with 47 points, behind first-place Frankton’s 32. The sixth and seventh grade boys team scored 33 points to finished 12 behind the host Blackhawks.

Brady Mills had the top overall finish for West Jay, taking first for the boys in 12:26. Jeremiah Cotherman was right behind him in second in 13:08.

Ty Fullenkamp placed 11th in 14:48, Willie Mayfield was 12th in 14:54 and Spencer Pitman took 13th in 15:51.

Kelly Weaver was the top girls runner in fourth place in 13:37, and Kristen Selvey finished five seconds back in sixth. Krystal Hutchens took ninth in 14:25, Brittany Burris was 13th in 14:53 and Kayla Barber was 15th in 15:11.

Also running for the girls team were Alex Bunch (18th), Whitney Henderson (21st) and Baylea Holdcroft (exhibition).

Eagle seventh wins

The West Jay seventh grade volleyball team picked up its second victory of the season Wednesday with a 21-11, 21-17 win at Monroe Central. The eighth grade Eagles took a 21-10, 21-10 defeat.

Chelsea Grady paced the seventh grade team (2-6) with 11 points. Carrie VanSkyock had five, Terry Kelley scored four, and Lindsey Current had three.

The eighth grade team (1-7) got four points from Janae Hatfield and one by Emily Taylor.[[In-content Ad]]
