No. 5 Norwell shuts out Starfires

OSSIAN — Taking on a top-10 team did not bode well for the Starfires in their season opener.
The South Adams High School baseball team managed just two hits Monday against the host Norwell Knights, who are ranked fifth in Class 3A, in a 10-0, five-inning defeat.
Norwell grabbed control quickly, scoring three times in the first inning. The Knights also tallied four runs in the third.
Dustin Wanner suffered the loss, giving up eight runs — three earned — on seven hits and four walks. He struck out four batters for the Starfires, who finished with three errors.
Alex Augsberger tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, and Blake Fox gave up two runs as he closed out the game.
Kyle Raugh and Fox had the only hits for South Adams.

FR drops 5th straight
ST. MARYS, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s softball team dropped its fifth straight game Monday, falling 6-1 to the host Memorial Roughriders.

The Indians, who opened the year with back-to-back wins, out-hit Memorial 8-6 but committed three errors. Five of the six Roughrider runs were unearned.
Taylor Guggenbiller had two hits and drove in Fort Recovery’s lone run as it took the lead in the first inning. But Memorial scored twice in the bottom of the first and added two runs apiece in the second and sixth innings.
Beca Tobe suffered the loss for the Indians, giving up the six runs on six hits and four walks. She struck out two batters.
Tobe scored the Tribe’s lone run and also had a hit and a walk.

Homan leads Jay
Taylor Homan led the Jay County seventh grade girls basketball team in three of its five games this weekend as it went 3-2.
Jay County defeated Union City twice, 27-10 and 21-14, and topped Randolph Southern 32-8. Both losses on the weekend came against Randolph Elite — 42-31 in pool play and 39-27 in the tournament championship game.
Homan had 12 and nine points respectively in the games against Randolph Elite, and shared the team-high of eight points with Kyndal Miller in the win over Randolph Southern. Lilly Rogers scored nine points in the first victory over Union City, and Emily Muhlenkamp had eight points in the second.[[In-content Ad]]
