COLDWATER, Ohio — A first-quarter lead against one of Ohio’s top teams did not hold up for the Patriots Tuesday.
The Jay County girls basketball team led the Division III No. 6 Coldwater Cavaliers by six after the opening period. But they struggled to score in the second and third quarters in suffering a 47-43 defeat.
Leading 16-10 after the first eight minutes, the Patriots managed just 11 points over the next two quarters. Coldwater (11-3) was up 32-27 after three periods and its lead hovered between five and eight points for most of the fourth quarter. Sara Garringer hit a long-distance 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.
Kendra Robbins and Jess Bettinger combined to shoot 10-of-20 for the Cavaliers, leading the way with 17 and 13 points respectively. Bettinger was 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and Robbins went 2-for-3.
Renee Hemmelgarn added nine points.
Jay County (9-9) got 10 points apiece from Cassandra Huelskamp and Garringer. Markie Runyon added six points.
Dana Horn, a 5-foot-4 guard, and Chelsea DeBoy shared the team-high of four rebounds. Horn and Nicole Pfeifer each had a pair of assists.
The Patriots won the junior varsity game 39-24 over Coldwater.
Brittany O’Dell scored seven points, and Amber Edmundson followed with six.

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team dominated the first three quarters for a 50-26 victory over the Adams Central Jets Tuesday.
Already leading by seven, the Patriots held Adams Central scoreless in the second quarter for a 30-8 halftime lead. They pushed the advantage to 27 points at the end of the third quarter as they improved to 11-2.
