No. 6 SA tops Golden Bears (04/28/08)

PARKER CITY - Ashton Morgan turned in a big effort for the Class 2A No. 6 South Adams High School softball team as it defeated the Monroe Central Golden Bears 4-1 Saturday.

Morgan gave up just a single unearned run in the win, allowing four hits and four walks. Two-thirds of her outs came via strikeouts as she finished with 14 Ks.

The junior also keyed the Starfires (9-3) offensively with a single, a run an RBI and three stolen bases.

Katrina Hawkins also had a single, a run and an RBI, and Anne Lehman doubled and drove in a run. Amber Melick and Karen Bollenbacher each scored once.

FR JV softball falls

Fort Recovery's junior varsity softball team found some offense in the second game, winning 9-8 over the Shawnee Indians after dropping the opener 9-0.

Shelby Brunswick led the win for the Indians (3-8) with two hits, two runs and two RBIs. Lindsay Schroer went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, Josie Guggenbiller had two hits and two runs and Carly Staugler racked up three hits.

Brunswick got the win, allowing five runs - three earned - on three hits and seven walks in five innings.

Fort Recovery managed just four hits, one each from Holly Thien, Kendra Brunswick, Lindsay Schroer and Stacy Gehle, in the opener. Andi Sutter gave up nine runs - four earned - on nine hits in the defeat.

Vagedes, Kalhig lead Tribe

NEW BREMEN, Ohio - Aaron Vagedes won two events and Kylie Kahlig took one as the Fort Recovery Middle School track teams competed Saturday at the Cardinal Invitational.

The Indian girls were fourth in the 10-team field, and the boys finished fifth at New Bremen.

Vagedes broke the meet record in the 400-meter dash, winning in 55.32 seconds. The old mark was 57.38, set last season.

He was also first in the 200 dash in 26.03, and placed third in the long jump at 16 feet, 7¼ inches.

Kahlig earned the lone win for the girls in 1:06.16 in the 400 dash. She was second in the 200 dash at 29.67 and third with a toss of 32 feet, 4½ inches in the shot put.

Other top efforts for the FRMS girls came from Becca Tobe (second - high jump) and Mariah Koester (fourth - 100 hurdles). Sam Muhlenkamp was fourth in the high jump for the boys team.

Portland wins three

Portland came out on top in all three battles against Dunkirk in Tri-County All-Star action Sunday - 8-6 in 12-and-younger baseball, 14-0 in 10-and-younger softball and 19-5 in 8-and-younger baseball.

In the 12-and-younger baseball game Wesly Hibbard led Portland with two hits and two runs. Christian Dotson had two hits, including a triple, and two runs for Dunkirk.

Angelica McKibben and Emily Minnich each had two hits and two runs for the Portland 10-and-younger softball team.

In the 8-and-younger game Mitchel Frasher homered and scored three times for Portland, and Nicholas Nickson had two triples and three runs. Chase Gillettte singled and scored twice for Dunkirk.[[In-content Ad]]
