No. 7 Braves silence SA (04/27/04)

Local Roundup

The offense disappeared Monday for the South Adams baseball team. But there was a good reason.

The Starfires managed just three hits and no runs, but it came in a 5-0 loss to the Class 3A No. 7 Bellmont Braves.

Bellmont (10-2) scored once in the second inning, once in the fourth and three times in the fifth. The runs supported an outstanding effort from Aaron Rumple, who won the pitchers’ duel against South Adams’ Aaron Givens.

While the Starfires managed just three hits, Givens limited the Braves to five hits. However, he gave up five runs — four earned — in six innings as he took the defeat.

He struck out four batters and walked one.

Kyle White doubled for South Adams, and Kyle Neuenschwander added a stolen base. Michael Yoder and Ton Van Gelder each had hits in the defeat.

The Starfires (6-7) will host Adams Central Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Fort 2nd at Tiger Relays

Fort Recovery’s track teams competed at the Ansonia Tiger Relays Friday, scoring a pair of seventh-place finishes at the 10-team event.

The girls team scored 15 points and also tied with Tri-County North. Covington grabbed first place with 92 points.

The best finishes for the Tribe boys team came in a pair of field events. The Indians were second in both with a distance of 51 feet, 51/4 inches in the long jump and a height of 25 feet, six inches in the pole vault.

The Indian girls managed just one top-three placing, taking third in the long jump at 39 feet, 53/4 inches.

The Tribe will host the Fort Recovery Invitational Friday at 4:30 p.m.
