The Patriots rallied to tie the seventh-ranked team in the state. But the deadlock didn't last long.
The undefeated Class 3A No. 7 Mississinewa Indians scored multiple runs in four different innings Thursday and got an excellent relief effort from freshman Ashlea Nash to defeat the Jay County High School softball team 9-4.
After falling behind 4-0, the Patriots (7-5) roared back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Three of the runs came before Mississinewa starter Ashley Lowe recorded an out, and Lauren Edmundson got a two-out single to score Lindsey Wellman with the tying run.
Amber Edmundson sat down the first two Indian batters to start the fifth inning before Sarah Jones smacked a two-out double. Jones scored on an error, and then Jennifer McCoin blasted the visitors' second home run of the game to push them ahead 7-4.
Mississinewa (9-0) tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth while Nash silenced the Patriot bats. She struck out the first two batters she fast, struck out the side in the sixth and finished with seven Ks in three innings.
Wellman paced the Patriot offense with a single, a run and two RBIs. Tiffany Davis had a single, a run and one RBI, Shelby Gierhart finished with a hit and a run and Trisha Champ stole a base and scored once.
Edmundson took the loss as four of the nine runs against her were unearned. She allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out two.[[In-content Ad]]
