Jay County's baseball team finished 13th in the voting in the Class 3A poll released Monday, but its six-game winning streak came to a halt Tuesday with a 12-6 loss to the Class 2A No. 7 Wapahani Raiders.
Wapahani rolled out to a 6-0 lead over the Patriots, who bounced back to pull within 6-4. But the Raiders (16-3) stayed ahead as they scored at least one run in each of the first six innings.
Andy Hughes suffered his first loss of the season for the Patriots (12-3), giving up seven runs - six earned - on eight hits and two walks in three innings. Trey Dunn and Phil Powell each tossed two innings of relief.
Josh Ludy and Tony McCowan each hit home runs to lead the Patriot offense. McCowan also had a double as he went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, and Ludy added a single, two RBIs and a run.
Michael Jobe also had two hits, and Hughes scored twice.
Girls tennis falls to Shenandoah
MIDDLETOWN - The Jay County girls tennis team forced one three-setter, but lost 5-0 Tuesday to the Shenandoah Raiders.
The Patriot No. 2 doubles duo of Cindy Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle came closest to victory. They rallied in the second set after dropping a first-set tiebreaker, but lost to Brittany Webber and Emily Vetor 7-6 (10-8), 4-6, 6-4.
In singles matches No. 1 Carissa Wilkins lost 6-1, 6-0 to Lauren Wilson, No. 2 Jenna Valentine fell 6-0, 6-3 to Kelly Ray and No. 3 Megan Adams dropped 6-0, 6-0 to Mariah Smith. Jessica Muhlenkamp and Tiffani Bickel lost 6-4, 6-0 to Kara Morton and Lindsey Rice at No. 1 doubles.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity match 6-5. The team of Betsy Knittle and Brittany Lewis scored an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and other victories came from Hannah McAbee, Mariah Clark and the teams of Briann Saxman and Megan Huntsman, and Becky Muhlenkamp and Brittney White.[[In-content Ad]]
